Hi everyone,
I am remodeling a bathroom, and I have a space between the end of the tub and the back wall where I want to have some storage space. The space is 22″ wide by 30″ deep, so I think it’s too small for a door and closet.
I am thinking of making some built in cabinets. Does anyone have some good ideas or pictures they’d like to share of some similar projects? The style of the bathroom is sort of a retro 1940’s look. I’ve never done anything built in, and I’ve been scratching my head all weekend over this!
Thanks,
Brian

BJC,
Hi, I'm from Brazil a litlle far from you but internet makes the distance shorter, give me how high is the space you have to built in the cabinet or so, and I'll try to help you.
See ya!

Two things come to mind. First, is pull out shelves, or just a false back so the closet or whatever isn't too deep. Half could be a niche in the adjoining room.
Second, I'm having trouble picturing 1940's (not being a designer) but I imagine something painted white, which is good because a painted piece would be easier to make. With the depression and the war on I don't think styles differed much through the 30's and 40's, so a 30's style might be appropriate. Art Deco perhaps? Or would Art Deco not have made it into ordinary homes?
When I think 30's, I think of frame and panel construction, with flat panels, and the outside of the frames with a heavy roundover, say 3/8 or 1/2 inch, with little round nickel plated knobs. Or with glass with a heavy texture.

Raats,
The ceiling slants in the bathroom, so the height is approx. 8'6 to 8' from right to left. I was thinking of making the cabinet square and bringing the finished wall down on the top.
Wayne,
Yeah, it's a simple black and white bathroom with subway tile. I like the idea of putting in some textured glass. It would add a nice dimension to the piece.
Migraine,
That looks nice! Thanks for the visual.

Seems like it might be a good space for extra towel storage for one option. I like the image of large bath-towels rolled up for storage behind the textured glass. The colors (or black and white) would show through in a soft blurred pattern.
What about a glass-fronted cabinet on top with a few medium-sized drawers beneath? Can never have too many drawers, LOL.
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
BJC, wood, water, steam , soap and lime call for a cabinet faced with ceramic tiles
Doors sized to accept full tiles ;he borders of which would be bullnosed. The carcasse should be planned to accept the same tiles, but kept in line with the existing tiles.
Contrasting colors or one or two randomly placed 'motif' tiles will add a neat detail
Use blum type hinges as the hardware will not show. Use 'touch' latches or secret latches on doors (No knobs showing) Stein.
Build like Migrain suggests and you're a winner.
