I am planning to build a window seat/storage unit to fit in our small bay window in the front of our house. I have not been able to find out much information on how to design such a beast nor what kinds of materials are used on the portions you would not see. What I have come across are “idea” books on built-in furniture, but not much on its construction.
I know that I will use cherry for all visible surfaces, but what is used on the inside? What kinds of joinery is appropriate? How is the furniture attached to the walls?

Paul, I won't be the last to say this I'm sure, but Taunton has published a book with a title like 'Built-In Storage', by Jim Tolpin. I have had it out of the library, just happened to see it in Chapters today, else I would not have remembered. It tells you a few things, & has some good ideas.
Cheers,
Chris
Chris, Paul, the Tolpin book is good, but it is primarily an "idea" book. General principles are discussed and there are occasional sidebars that offer some construction detail, but it's geared more toward inspiration rather than technique or technology.

Paul,
You can build the interior out of any hardwood you choose, or even use pine if you can find som decent stuff. As to construction you have a number of choices. You could build it in (literally) by nailing cleats to the walls and securing your cherry panels to them. You could also build it as a box and then just attach it to the wall with screws. Could also make it in panels and install them one at a time. I don't see that as an advantage unless you have really crooked walls. My choice would be to build it as a box and install it as a unit. Whatever you decide I would recommend that you line it with cedar so it can be used as a blanket chest. You can buy osb which is made from cedar chips and can easily be used to line the box. (I'm not referring to common osb like that used in the construction industry). Hinge the seat and you now have a combination blanket chest/window seat. Good luck.
