I am looking for advice and or solutions for a wooden chair seat that has a split of a previously glued butt joint. The split is actually wider on the under side of the seat, and is spilt from back to front with about an 1 1/2 inch glued together section in the front. It appears to be glued long grain to long grain, looks like a slight bevel of a 1/2 degree at the bottom of the split from the top. I tried to clamp the split together to see what I was dealing with and noticed the forementioned bevel, the joint would not close and left a 1/16th of an inch gap.
Any Ideas on how to fix the problem, short of resawing the joint and regluing.?

Can you attach two pieces at right angles to grain underneath? Say 3/4 wide by 1-1/4 high. Use generous number of screws that are 1/8" to 1/4" shy of top surface -- don't count on glue holding.
