I want to purchase a lathe, I live in Ireland and the selection seems very limited, are there any other woodworkers from Ireland or UK who have any good advice?

Trawl the secondhand machinery stockists because they cleared school workshops when they were closed. The schools had seriously good machines, and quality lathes do not wear out. Affordable modern stuff has bells and whistles but lacks sheer stability and endurance (in my opinion).
I have a Denford Viceroy short bed from the seventies and from a school. Children were not trusted to use machines much so they have very little wear and bearings at that time could be adjusted by the user.
Great suggestion, have begun looking, limited success so far but have some contacts at schools which may help, thanks.

Thanks, also found Jet dealer in Kilcock, Ireland, will be making comparisons on prices and features. Time to read the tool reviews again! Many thanks for suggestion and link.

A, I feel bad, I just sold a Harrison Union Graduate for the widow of a friend of mine(where were you two months ago) it had a swan neck bed and a 5'+ long bed with pedestal, about 6 tool rests, tail stock and at least a doz. faceplates-two over 10".
She was only looking for a few bucks and that it would go to someone who would use it to make nice things, pity. Paddy (one of the Kilkenny cats)
Did you have to tell me that! Sorry to hear about your friend and I hope the lathe went to someone who will carry out her wishes. Keep me in mind if you hear of any other pieces coming on the market down in Kilkenny. Thanks.
Hi,to you my good man would you not be a friend Captain Brady's he normaly has a tall commander by his side I owe him a double Paddy's if you should bump into him tell him I was esking after him
M, sorry I am not but I could do with some Paddy 10 year old as we don't get it in the states and it is missed, so I have to make do with Red Breast or Jamie 12.
Not to mislead our island lad the lathe is in NY (really it's now in my pick up truck-a chore indeed) on it's way to TN on Saturday morning. The widow didn't want much so even crated and shipped it could have been a good deal. It is going to a small TN sawyer/cabinet maker who WILL make it sing. All the best, Padraig.
BTW, my new neighbors in TN have relatives that have been producing adult recreational beverages for decades in the foothills of our mountains and they have now developed a great love for my Red Breast.pfh.

if you're of the aran islands, why not make one using a willow tree twisted downward, with a foot treadle? it's been done...
Expert since 10 am.
The Aran Islands it is, your willow sapling lathe has crossed my mind several times but I'll leave the "green" lathes to the younger set. Thanks for the suggestion though, if electricity becomes a problem we may all be looking for willow saplings, let me know if you want any for planting now as a hedge (in both ways) against future problems!
