oh boy. here goes. an open can of worms. my old craftsman
finally gives out. for once i want to buy new. what i thought could be bought in a day has turned into a two week ordeal.
i can spend $800. looking at contractor 10″ types.
i like the jet with the cast iron and xacta fence. of course the
delta 36-431 is in the running as well. now my local dealer
tells me of the powermatic 64 a. what is the advantage of
left tilt? can anyone offer pros and cons on these models?
my guy says they are all pretty much the same-it’s all a
personal preference. i do like american made products and
there is something about the jet and the xacta fence that i like.
i’m tearing out what little of my hair is left. comments?

Looney, have you perused the other two (or maybe even three) current tablesaw threads? There are major conversations going on there about preferences for and experiences with various saws and fences. Look under "Tools for WWing" and under General Discussion.

You got on me about that now your refering this guy to other threads on the subj which is essentially what I did..........hmmmmm....... Are you sure your not my wife incognito????? Im suspicious Tere if thats you come on now ...fess up... Darkworksite4: When the job is to small for everyone else, Its just about right for me"
Oh, I know Ron, I'm being unforgivable inconsistent, but what with there being 2 (or maybe even 3) very active, current threads on TS's I just couldn't resist! Besides, those of us who've been participating in those threads are exhausted after our flying fingers have been posting our not-so-humble opinions about the various options (well mine are anyway).
I guess I reserve the right to refer to current threads if I'm so kind as to post the links. Just trying to be a pal.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
im just funnin ya FG I could resist. Notice my referances about the possibility of you being the wife..:) Darkworksite4: When the job is to small for everyone else, Its just about right for me"
Yep, I could tell you were funnin'! Got my ESP cranked up for long-distance reception! forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
What gave out? My craftsman 10 saw's motor gave out and can't get a replacement one for it as it is over 25 years old. I asked for one that would fit into it and it's on the way. Replace the whole saw? I didn't think I should as I had add too many things on it. So that old boy is worth alot to me for all it's years it has done with me.
Aren't Craftsman saw left tilt? The Powermatic would be the same, anything right tilt you would have to take a little time to get used to unless you are familiar with them already.
If you're serious about woodworking, save a few more dollars and buy a decent saw. I'd consider the Unisaw the minimum for good quality. You'll never regret that decsion, but you will end up wondering why the hell you bought another contractor's saw when it, too, craps out, won't cut square, arbor bearings give out, wings won't stay alligned, ad nauseum.
