Anyone out there have experience with buying tools from Canada,in general, or more specifically buying an Akeda dovetail jig? I was all ready to pull the trigger on an Akeda jig and the checkout page informs me that I’m responsible for any: “border fees, customs duties, import duties, etc” and that they “will prepare any necessary documents for cross border shipments.” Is this just standard lingo of no importance, or is this a potential problem? Any Akeda owners out there that could speak to this? Thanks, John

If Akeda is a US or Canadian made product there is no duty payable because both countries belong to the NAFTA free trade agreement. Canadians pay a small customs handling fee, usually $5, on imports from the US, though even that is sometimes waived. I don't know if there's a similar fee for Americans.

My last experience buying blades from Canada jaded me. They got held at the border for an eternity because they said they could not verify that I was a corporation and I'm like, you idiots, the name is on the doc, the fed id is on it, my contact info is on it . . . just stupid
So a lot of phone calls later its still at the border they just used FedEx the next time and it got here in 2 days but thats pretty much the end of me buying from Canada unless I really really want it bad.
Real trucks dont have sparkplugs
I live in Canada and am usually looking to iport the other way. I always try to find a Canadian distributor for US and European products. You might pay a few bucks more, but these importers have most of the angles covered. The nice thing is they deal with the bureaucrats at the container or truckload level.
I checked the AKEDA website and their US distributor is The Jig Store
http://www.thejigstore.com/
Try them and let everyone know how it goes.

Hey... Akeda is Canadian? So is Liegh?
What's with Canadians and Dovetail jigs?
It's cold up here in Canada and we have nothing better to do than sit in our igloos and cut dovetails all winter! When that gets boring we invent machines to help us cut the dovetails faster so we can spend more time snowmobiling!
At least thats the way I see it here in Calgary
Bob
I thought Canadian dovetail jigs were necessary because it was "too cold for glue to set" - so you need "mechanical strength".Frosty"I sometimes think we consider the good fortune of the early bird and overlook the bad fortune of the early worm." FDR - 1922
Calgary... How messed up was Sunday. Finally warm enough to put my lights up... then it snows and takes me 40 minutes to drive to work on Monday...
Despite a very limited selection of stationary machines we Canadians have lots of good tool manufacturers...
General, Leigh, Akeda, Adria, Veritas, Oneway... I wonder if its been the traditionally low Canadian Dollar that drives it.
Before you buy the Akeda check out the Leigh 24. I just bought one, I looked at the Akeda, but Leigh seems to give me a lot more flexability. So far I love it, no regrets at all. I upgraded from using a Porter Cable, its like day & night.
I bought a General 8" jointer from up north and paid no duty.
