We are adding a few tools to our cabinet / furniture shop and wanted to know of other sources to look for good old woodworking equipment. We have had good luck with IRS auctions and a couple of independent dealers. Ex-Factory is usually pretty high, so we were looking to see if anyone could suggest other places to look.
Our best tools have come used, an Oliver spiral head planer, a 24″ Northfield jointer, a wysong and miles mortiser, etc.
Thanks in advance,
Michael Corlis

This is the wrong site for Oliver and Northfield. Most here regard Grizzly as their Machinery GOD.
Try over at http://www.woodweb.com in the machinery exchange.

EX-factory's markup is a joke.
Watch your local paper too. You never know what will come up.

and of course, for machines like the ones you're taling about, check with the folks at http://www.owwm.com.

Take a look at govliquidation.com/list/c7525. This site is the department of defense surplus auction. They have all kinds of machinery but beware of the H number which tells the condition status. Remember that anything can be rebuilt if you have enough money. There may be something in your area that you can inspect before bidding on it. Most of the items sell at bargain prices and some may be a good buy provided you're sure of what you're getting.
I find that new machinery is always a better deal.
If you count the time you use to find, move, and repair used machinery, you are well behind.
The only time used machinery is a good deal is when that type of machine is no longer being produced. Even then new custom machinery is often a better choice.
But then I have a business where ny time is worth some money.
If money is no object, then, maybe new is better. Always? I don't think so. I bought a totally restored Oliver 24" itch head planer for around 7K that new would be over 30K.
And please, all of our time is worth money.... I never touched that planer until it arrived in our shop, ready to go. Same with a 24" Northfield jointer, it was little used and we picked it up, ready to go, for less than one fourth the cost of a new one. It is a workhorse for us.
