Hi All
What would be a fair price to pay for black walnut in the log. I have acess to the Dolye or Scribner log scale so I know about the number of bf. they will wield.
They are about 12′ long and 17 to 20” diam.

Wchips, Figure board ft, amount of waste, going rate for dry material in board ft. Subtract 60% from going rate. That should be the rate.

I offerd the guy .35 per bd ft in the log.he cuts it down I cut logs ang haul about75 miles.to sawmil. pay sawer .30 bd ft to saw. then I have to stack and sticker it.and cover the pile to keep the rain out.
There was someone about 120 miles from me that was selling walnut {log run} for .70 bd ft he saws I haul and stack.
I do not use all that mutch walnut lumber. Most all my custemers want red oak stained lite I would say about 90% of them want red oak

For walnut, the log scale is best figured from the heart diameter of the small end.
Hi Keith
Question/ Witch scale do you think comes the closest to the actual board feet in a log. I had some small walnut logs sawed up With a wood miser band aw about a year ago. About 12'' diam. 6' long I had them sliced one way clear through left all the bark on .
when i was stacking them i checked several logs for yield including sapwood. inside bark The Doyle scale was about rite on for smaller logs. No way would you get what the International scale or the other one said. As the logs get bigger it goes the opposite , Doyle scale overstates board feet over International scale.
Just wondering witch one most people go by?

I'm not sure about the rest of you but with a little searching and scavanging, I've been able to aquire logs of all kinds (including Walnut, Cherry and Oak) for no cost at all. Many times, if you find a new subdivision being built in your area, the developer will have many of the trees ripped from the ground and chipped up into mulch. If you can catch them before they get to the chipper, they'll often give them to you.
Farmers are also a good source of downed trees. Timing is everything though. Be ready with a trailer though.
