I live about 20 minutes from Manhattan in NJ. I typically get my wood from the place in Fairfield…(if you know you know). Been going there for awhile and not always happy with them.
Anybody have any recommendations for me around the area?
Looking for quality hardwoods 8/4 and up.

Condon lumber on Ferris Ave in White Plains
Conway Hardwood Products on Rt.7 in Gaylordsville, CT. A bit further north than White Plains but they have a good selection.
Sounds like you need a road trip. We have a blessing in SE Pennsylvania. You could make a trip and go to Lancaster and visit Groff & Groff and Hearn Hardwoods and more. They are the best.
I live in Tarrytown NY and my shop is just over the CT/NY border 20 miles north of that. When I want to hand select my lumber I go to the previously mentioned Conway Lumber, Kellogg in Bethel, CT, or Condon Lumber (in that order). If I just need a certain board footage (or any sheetgoods at all), I use Robert's Plywood in Deer Park, NY. Excellent selection, service, and price.
Condon? "buyer beware"...one of the worst customer interaction/service reputations in northeast U.S.. Google that a bit and get the full picture before you go.

I don't know what the google says, but I have had a very good experience at the White Plains yard. Friendly and helpful. I have no relattionship with them except as a customer.
Hearne Hardwoods and Grof & Grof are worth the road trip. If you want to catch something special, Hearnes has an open house, usually in early October. They are only about 20 min. apart so you can do both in a day. Hearnes also has a pretty good website.
We actually take the kids to Eden Resort every summer...Cool place.
If you are talking road trip then you must checkout Keim Lumber in Charm Ohio.
