Hi,
I bought a set of new cabinet hinges. I am supposed to insert the mounting plate to the hinge and set the hinge from “closed” position to “open” position before I can do the installation.
But the component that contains the spring would only move a little when I tried to pull it to the “open” position. I am afraid it would break the small plastic piece on the opposite end if I use too much force to pull it.
I attached two images for illustration: one is the new hinge in the “closed” position and the mounting plate, the other is the old hinge (which I want to replace) in the “open” position with the mounting plate inserted in it.
Could someone advise me the right way to pull the hinge to its “open” position? Do I need a special tool to do that?
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Wyatt

You should be able to use the plate. If it is too tight screw the plate to a stick to gain some leverage.
Just pry it open, you won't break it. Those hinges have stiff springs to keep the door closed and you are just feeling the resistance of the spring after a point it will go away.
Thank you very much.
As per your advice, I inserted a screwdriver under the (spring) metal part and tried to lift it up (open). But the metal part only opened partially and was stuck despite a lot of force used. The resistance is not from the spring itself but it felt like something was blocking it. The metal part then sprang back to its closed position when I let go the screwdriver. (Please see the image attached.)
Am I missing anything? Any tips on how to pivot the metal part so that it can open completely?
Thanks!
Wyatt
