I am a hobbyist woodworker. I have done a few commission projects when “no” does not work. One project I have agreed to do is make display cabinets for a business which will be opening in October.
I can make the cabinets from the pictures provided, but have wondered how it would be If I had some software to help me with the drawings. I am totally ignorant about desgn software but I hear about CAD a lot.
Would someone give me a quick tutorial on the benefits of CAD and how to get started using it? Where can it be purchased and what is the cost.

The easyest way is to use a program. You can go to http://www.deltacad.com and download a 30day trial version for free and if you decide to buy I believe it's only about $40. Or you can go to http://www.vectorengineer.com and download a free version and play with it all youi want.

Here are a couple of free CAD programs. I just downloaded them and so can't give you any recommendations.http://www.cadstd.com/http://www.progecad.com/Also of interest, check out sketchup. Not CAD, but lets you do professional looking renderings.http://www.sketchup.com/
Sketchup is now owned by Google. Almost the same program, just as good. But it's completely free, not just the old trial version.

Sketch up is in two versions...the free and the pro which still costs but has a few more bells and whistles. I hear you can do most of what you need with the free one but the pro verison gives you more file options.
The MAC version should be out soon.
