The quartersawn vs. flatsawn figure makes me think zebrawood, but the color seems off for that.

Firewood? Gilbert&Sullivan in French? Clever!

Looks like palm tree to me.
Bill,
I think you're right! The zebrawood id wasn't sitting quite right with me due to the color. However, I think you're dead on with red palm.Jim"There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. The US forest service will identify your wood at no charge if you send them a sample. Check out:

how heavy is it? also, what are the dimentions?
Is this a pop-quiz, or are you really trying to find out. If you don't have a clue, then it would be helpful if you gave us a little more to go on. First like is that color off, as in a negative, and how large is this piece, and where did it come from?
At first, I was inclined to think that it might be partially fossilized, but then the more I looked at it, I am more inclined to think that it is a piece of thick bark that someone cleaned up to study or admire. This would explain the voids, which are a natural occurrence since as the tree grows under the bark, it gets stretched until it cracks.
Is it really light weight?
If you know the answer, and I am right, do I win a prize?
Keith,
I agree with you. It looks magnified, like a picture taken from a microscope. It seems to be more barky looking than wood looking to me.
