Hey everyone:
I recommend a new discussion category titled “Can this mistake be fixed?” because I wasn’t sure where to post my problem.
I’m building a TV stand in the Mission style to match the rest of my living room. The box is built from 3/4 quartersawn oak plywood and I’ve applied face and side frames from 1/2″ quarter sawn oak hardwood.
I made a mistake in sizing a stile at the back of each side of the stand — they’re 2 1/4″ wide instead of 2 3/4″ and the 1/2″ difference will contrast with the 2 3/4″ stile that will parallel them at the front of each side. In other words, when viewed from the side, one stile will be 1/2″ wider than the other.
The obvious solution would be to take it off and put on a new one. BUT, I attached it with Titebond III glue and a ton of clamps. This is flat hardwood glued to flat plywood. My question is this: is there any way for me to get these stiles off now that they’re glued on without destroying the plywood underneath? Should I just let this mistake go, knowing that 99% of the people who see it won’t notice or think I did it on purpose? If I can take it off, how do I do so?
Thanks
Josh

Hi Josh ,
Is the box a 1/2" shy ? or does it measure right but the rear stiles are a 1/2" small ?
Can you add behind the rear stiles ? can you add a surface molding to look heavier , run it past the back ?
If the box is the correct size and the back stiles are too small then the rails on the side panels are the wrong size as well .
The rail would be 1/2" shorter ,
You could use a router and mill that bad boy away , glue down another .

Dear Old Dusty:The box is the correct size. What happened is that the front stile is supposed to be 2 1/4" because it has a 1/2" stile coming out perpendicular to meet it at a 90 degree angle from the front of the box. So from the side the two together (the side stile of 2 1/4" and the side of the front stile of 1/2") form 2 3/4" width to the eye. The back stile, which is the problem, should have measured 2 3/4" to equal this.I can add 1/2" to that back stile -- I'm just not sure it won't be more noticeable with the line in the joint than the missing 1/2" would be.Thanks for your suggestion on the router. I wouldn't have thought of that.
Select a piece of material that is a good match in color and grain and the splice will go unseen .
good luck dusty
I agree that a well matched splice glued and clamped would be the way to go.
I haven't worked with type III, but with yellow wood glue that hasn't fully cured yet you can sometimes apply heat with a heat gun to loosen the glue bond.
