Merry Christmas All,
I want to bang together a small 2 shelf bookcase for a childs room. I came accross some 1×10 cedar s4s for a 1.69 per lf. I figure 20 lf should be plenty. It really caught my eye, its at a closeout place, so I got to thinking.
Does this sound ok to use for my intended purpose, and if so, any hints?
Thanks alot.

You may want to do a little 'googling' first, there was a major discussion on 'shop built tools' about several people who had severe lung problems from red cedar sawdust.

Joe P ,
If the child is old enough not to chew or eat the wood then I think it would be safe since it will not get sanded after completion . However even after a film coated finish some residual Cedar smell will exist .
Cedar would not be my first choice for woods for this project , how about Pine or Fir or Hemlock if soft woods is what you want to use , Cedar lined closets and chests are common place , normally with no health concerns .
To my knowledge the health risks from Cedar are in the sawdust and splinters , in fact some Cedars are up there rather high on the lists of poisonous woods .
good luck dusty
Both I and my son are allergic to most cedars. My doc says that this affects about 20% of the population. Dust from working the wood is a problem, but cedar chips used in some pet beds also causes almost immediate reactions. I have had a reaction to cedar paneling in a restaurant though it looked as though it had a minimal seal on it.
Wonderful deal. I bought a bunch of redwood burl during a trip to California. After ten minutes working with it in my shop, my eyes swelled shut. Anybody want to buy some burl?
