And should it be??? And is it at all practical?
Admittedly, I’m a dinosaur when it comes to the internet, but I’ve spent the afternoon attempting to find a source for prefinished A1 maple plywood in the near midwest to no avail.
Great sources in California and Oregon, ditto in Maine and Wisconsin. Nada that I can find near Louisville, KY.
I know that there’s a solution to this, but I’m apparently barking up all the wrong trees.
Does anyone do this?

p.s. I know that I can drive to Cincinnati, OH and make the rounds of lumber yards there, but I’d like to avoid that if I can.

Mike,
I don't know where you are, but if you're in Michigan, LL Johnson lumber company in Charlotte likely has what you need.
The answer to your question, "Can I order plywood on the Internet," is undoubtedly yes. But the shipping charges will eat you up, and I suspect there's potential for damage as well. If you have no other alternative, it would actually be better to order it locally through a lumberyard (If there are any left in your area!) as their shippers are used to delivering sheet goods of this type.

Edit: Mike, I just reread your post, and the part about your being in Kentucky jumped out at me. Belay what I said about Michigan. That would be a mighty long haul..

You were nice to reply.
Actually, I feel stupid even asking the question. I think I'll bite the bullet and drive to Cincinnati.
You'd think that a city as large as Louisville, surrounded as it is by trees, would have a hardwood lumberyard that is willing to deal with the public.
Oh, well.

You might drive out to the smaller sawmills and poke around,, solid wood there is often priced based on wholesale pricing which makes solid wood cheaper than plywood.. yes you might need to do a glue up or two but the prices we are speaking about makes it well worth while..
Hi Frenchy,
I've got to try to locate the local sawmills simply out of interest. I know that I'll be a lot happier once I've located a couple of sources in this area.
And I like your idea of gluing up to make the panels that I will need on future projects, and I'll probably even shellac them :) , but I'm committed to ply for the case work of this piece.
Thanks for the input - always welcome!

Unless you want a lot of plywood, say, 50 sheets or more, shipping is definitely going to be expensive.
Do you have any lumberyards (as opposed to "home centers") at all? Some of them may be willing to order small quantities for you.
-Steve
Hi Steve,
As close as I can determine, there are home centers, BIG wholesale-only contractor centers for construction lumber, and one commercial-only millwork center.
I've got to get over my local-itus and drive over to Cincinnati - heck it's only about 90 miles from where I live.
Mike
A knowledgeable friend of mine, (from Cincinnati, BTW) ordered a small order of plywood from, IIRC, Steve Wall lumber and found that even factoring in shipping and handling, it was a good deal. He was satisfied with the purchase. Before you "make the rounds" realize there are few Cincinnati dealers left. Paxton will only sell full sheets and no longer cut anything, not even "cut to haul." The company that is springing up to take their place as a full service retailer is not yet open.Another option to check is Frank Miller Lumber in Union City, IN. They started carrying good plywood earlier this year. I don't know about Louisville, but will deliver to your door, minimum quantity one sheet to Cincinnati as long as you wait a few days for their next load to town (normally within a week).
Cool! And Thanks! I will check that out.

There is a place in Lexington called Hardwood Specialties. They have quiet a selection of plywood and hardwoods with pretty good prices also. They are located on the sw side of town--convenient if you are coming from Louisville.
Ah, the rewards of correspondence.
I've googled them, have phone number in hand, and will call them in the AM.
Thanks!
