Can wood conditioner be the final stain
We had 2 unfinished flat panel white oak doors made for our powder room vanity. As per the company’s recommendation we treated them with one coat of oil based wood conditioner in preparation for staining. We sanded them with 150 grit before the wood conditioner and followed the Varathane directions to a tee on applying the conditioner. We really like the color they are with only the wood conditioner.
Can we skip staining and add a clear finish? If yes, will the color with only wood stain last? And if it will, what clear finish do you recommend?
If not, we are not sure how to proceed to preserve this color. The wood conditioner has also dried for roughly 6 hours. We tested 2 stain colors in a hidden corner. They did not look to be going on evenly and we did not like the color as much as the plain conditioned color.
Thanks!

If you like the color, your best bet is to go straight to a water based poly. It won't add any more color to the wood. Pretty much everything else will darken it some more.
I wouldn't use the wood conditioner as the final coat. It simply won't provide enough protection for a door.
I agree with JohnC2. A water based polyurethane will add very little color. It's easy to apply and will withstand the use a door will receive quite well.
