I am building a clock. The stain looked OK until I rubbed it down before applying poly. After rubbing some of the stain came off. I did not think I could do anything about it so I went ahead with the poly. Now I regret it. It is light in those areas.
Is it possible to sand off the poly and restain?

This seems like a simple question for veteran woodworkers. Can someone help?
Yes, you can remove all the finish using chemical stripper, such as those containing methylene chloride. You need lots of ventilation and skin protection. Once the finish has been removed and the stripper neutralized you can retain.
stain over poly
poly is easy to remove if it is relatively fresh as poly takes a long time to fully cure. Next time add a little finish to your stain and the stain won't be so apt to be removed after rubbing. Many manufacturers do add finish to their stains to prevent this from happening..
