Canister filter for Delta Dust Collector
I have a Delta 1-1/2 HP dust collector. Currently I have one of the aftermarket bags on the top and a standard cloth bag on the bottom. Looking to improve performance and reduce dust even more. Small dust particles just laugh at the stock cloth bag as they pass through on their way to the house above the shop. I am thinking about putting the aftermarket cloth bag on the bottom and getting an aftermarket canister type for the top. Seems like this should not increase the static pressure excessively since they sell 1-1/2” HP dust collectors with a similar setup. Don’t want to spend money on a new system. Questions: 1.Anyone tried this, and how does it perform? 2.Can you recommend a brand of cylinder for the Delta? Top diameter is about 20”. I have seen Penn and Jet for sale. Thanks in advance

Wynn Environmental make a nice conversion unit. You want to get the most surface area you can. Some aftermarket cartridges do not disclose the surface area and can be over priced - even Grizzly want $170.00 for a canister cartridge.

I put a no name cartridge on my 2HP single stage and the reduction of dust cycling through the shop was noticeable.
Your lower bag should not be passing any dust at all, that is not the intent. It is possible that your seal is not good and dust is leaking out at that point. You can replace it with heavy duty plastic bags.

Thanks Don,
Which filter media did you get? Did the kit work as promised?
As stated, I put a no name canister on my 2HP as my cyclone installation is moving along as it should.
A local retailer went out of business so I scooped this up at 50% off - still $110.00.
I definitely noticed a reduction in the amount of very fine dust right around the DC, the little poofs that occurred when stating the machine up.
The suction is slightly better, certainly not double, but I have no idea how much more surface area is available. You can only do so much with a single stage unit.
I am installing a Clear Vue cyclone. Taking way to long , but the end is in sight. That 6" pipe is sure intimidating compared to 4" flex hose.

I have the same Delta dust collector and used the 2 cloth bags for years. Got tired of fighting the lower bag when it got full, and getting a face full of dust when it came time to empty the rascal. I got the aftermarket Delta canister for the top and started using clear plastic bags for the lower. Other companies sell similar canisters-Penn State, SevenCornersAce has Jet cainsters for sale and Wynn. Made a slight increase in pressure(hard to notice). My biggest reason for the change is chip removal. The only drawback is the cost of the plastic bags. You can buy bags made for this, but they are kind of pricey. Woodcraft sells 5 bags for around $23 in NC. My thrifty side has me emptying the bag into a garbage can and reusing them.
Is your DC the 50-850? If it is you can buy the Delta factory canister for it.- Delta makes the 50-850A which comes with the canister filter instead of the cloth upper bag. Amazon carries the canister (p/n 50-750) ............... not inexpensive at $200 plus. I've stuck with bags on my 50-850 ......... it's the later 5 micron setup- cloth upper and plastic lower bags and for my purposes works well enough. Iirc earlier 50-850's has a 30 micron cloth upper and lower bags. I've read positve things about the Wynn conversions and it may be a less expensive way to go.
Realize this is an old post but I know from experience that Wynn is a good supplier. Environmental Filter is an aftermarket supplier that can manufacture custom pleated filter cartridges for various applications. Cartridges might be a bit more expensive but are better in the long run than bags. Though as long as you have some sort of dust collection system, your lungs will thank you.
