I posted earlier about making a King Size bed- Well looking on the internet I have looked at several other types of beds.
I always do this – I want to start a project and always find a dozen ways to go .
I found this pic. of a Cannon Ball Bed I really like click on” all beds” at http://www.cottageworkers.com
I think the pic. is maybe a Queen size.
I was wanting to know what size do you think the post are?
I’m taking a stab in the dark but I think to the top of the Head Board 54 in. and the post 4 X4 X 60 in.- 1 1/2 X 6 in. rails?
Also I’m not sure but with this type of Head Board where it tenons into the post it is not glued or pinned? The bolts in the end rails set above the side rail bolts keeping the tops of the post together on the Head Board?Same for the Foot Board?
Another thing is with that big honkin Head Board 2 -3 ft. wide what wood wood you recommend as far a swelling and shrinking . I would like a hardwood but don’t know If it would be better in Pine.
Also with the post I would like to make them from solid stock- will hard wood this thick be hard to find without cracks?
Maybe laminating would be the way to go. Just hate the way you can feel the glue joints .
Just wanting some opinions
Thanks Ronnie

Ron,
Just guessing...I would think the posts are about 48-54" tall...and if the bed is queen then probably 60" wide. Perhaps a full 4x4 stock would do for the posts...of course in two pieces..can't turn it that long....you can get stock that size easily...maybe ash like they use for baseball bats.
I'd probably do the whole thing in Ash....heavy

I agree, probably a queen.

I agree with previous reply -- 4X4.

There are two or three considerations when thinking of dimensions for a bed.

At each end, there are obviously two points at which the headboard meets the posts. I would glue and pin the top (visible) joint. I would pin the bottom joint in a slot, so that the board can expand/contract across its grain.

I strongly suggest that you choose the wood based on the finished look that you want. Then deal with the expansion of that species as needed. There are a number of very stable woods, but each has characteristics that you might not like.

Maybe, depends on the choice of wood.

Then laminate them so that you can't feel them. Make absolutely sure that the pieces are dead straight, and dead flat. Then glue them up, using plenty of clamps. Then mill them to size, and chuck them into the lathe. If you have done your homework, the gluejoints will be invisable execpt on very close inspection.
