I am trying to fix a bad spot in the finish of a chair that was rubbed by a infant seat. I have had this problem before and haven’t yet figured it out. I can’t get the grain of the wood open to accept the stain. I sanded with 220 and then put OMS to open the grain, but I cannot get stain to take.
Anyone know of any other suggestions to open the grain and repair the chairs?

100 grit and some more elbow grease.
*DeanThe fibers of the wood have been compressed in the areas that came in contact with the seat. Sanding will only open them slightly. To open them more, place a damp cloth over the problem areas and place a clothes iron on the highest setting over the areas. The steam will swell the fibers. It may take a number of tries to accomplish this. Once done, let the piece dry at least 24 hours, then level sand with a 220 grit. You should then be able to stain with no problem.Bob
*Use a dye mixed with the top coat. paint it on with a small brush. Drew
