Can you please tell me how to use captive ring tools (for the lathe). I’ve made captive rings on the lathe, off and on, for years. Only recently I saw a set of tools advertised in a magazine and bought them, thinking that they would give me a faster and better way to make the captive rings. I thought there would be some kind of brief description of how to use them. There wasn’t, and as much as they cost I don’t want to take a chance on breaking them.
I appreciate anything you could tell me about these tools.
Thanks

I've never used this specialized tool. In fact, I've never made captive rings before.
I did a google search and found one such tool available at Woodcraft.com. http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=20164
By the looks of it, it's a just a specially shaped scraper that allows you to reach in to a tight curved spot that a straight scraper might not be able to reach.
My advice would be to use it just like you would any other scraper but cut lightly. Since it's such a delicate blade you want to avoid a catch.
