Carcass construction with qtr and flat sawn lumber
hey folks,
In general carcass construction is it possible to mix quarter and flat sawn material in joinery? for instance, I’m building a cabinet out of quarter sawn ash. sides and door will be quarter sawn, and I’m wondering if I can do the top, bottom (dowel joined) and shelves (dadoes) with flat sawn material without having wood movement issues. If I do stopped dadoes for the shelves, could I leave extra space at the back of the joint for the extra movement of the flat sawn material? And I’m thinking about nailing the top on (instead of dowel joints) as well.
thanks!

Thats fine. A single wide board usually has a mix of quartersawn and flatsawn. Mixing them won't be an issue.
Are your shelves solid wood, and is the grain all running in the same direction? If so, you can attach them and not worry about leaving room.
I'm not sure how you are thinking about attaching the top?
hey John,
just dowel joints. yeah all running together. thanks for the help!
