Hi, I have been a serious wood worker for the past 55 years. I began when my wife gave me a Sears table saw for Christmas. I TRY HARD TO MAKE GIFTS FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY. I HAVE MADE WOOD PUZZLES, TOYS, FURNITURE FOR ALL. THIS INCLUDES WINDSOR CHAIRS lADDER BACKS, COFFEE TABELS DESKS AND WHATEVER I COULD THINK OF. IT IS TIME TO START NOW. I think that I would enjoy carving a set of utensiles for each family and making a stool for the newly weds! Woven bottom of course.
My shop has graduated from the 8″ tables to a nice, well equiped workshop that occupies the entire basement. Did I mention that the Sears saw had to be used in the rented kitchen? Did I mention that that was 55 years ago?
I am anxious to hear from some knots with suggestions.

Geeee ye gettin' to old... Make them a nice pencil post bed!
Get the (out of print) book "Swedish Carving Techniques" by Wille Sundqvist. It will teach you all you need to know about carving the ne plus ultra spoon. It is worth looking for it at used book sites or e-bay. If you want the Reader's Digest version, see Drew Langsner's "Country Woodcraft" book, that has a chapter on same.
I'm still kicking myself for not buying all 10 copies when Woodcraft Store had them on their clearance table.

NA! Carving IS a ART! I'm a good woodworker (I think) I CAN NOT CARVE! Well, to look like something...
EDIT:: Carving is sort of like painting the Mona Leasa .. Either ya have it OR DO NOT

This is not carving hound dogs, boots or old men in a tree. It's a lesson in wood engineering, hand tool control, and simple shapes. Woodworking.
Will,
Spoonmaking isn't an art. Just cut off everything that doesn't look like a spoon.
Cheers,
Ray
Just cut off everything that doesn't look like a spoon.... THAT was funny!
