I am faced with replacing an exisisting casement window in a customer’s house and have never done it before. I haven’t even looked at it yet and I want to know what to look for as far as possible difficulties. I am replacing it with a vinyl clad double hung replacement window. Will I have to re-trim the jambs? how about the exterior? I’d like to have an idea before I get myself into trouble. Thanks!!!!!

post at breaktime they are more experienced at this than cabinetmakers
You will have to remove the inside trim and then reinstall new trim, though there is a chance that some of the old trim can be salvaged, but that is unlikely. You may have to do some sheet rock patching and possibly framing if the new window doesn't have the same outside dimensions as the window you are replacing.
Outside trim is usually a part of the window unit and will go with the old window. The new window will have probably have some trim around it but this may have to be removed and replaced with a different style of trim to match the rest of the house.
Depending on how the old window was installed, you may have to remove some of the exterior siding around the window to get the new one installed properly and correctly flashed. Do not neglect proper flashing or attempt to substitute caulk for proper installation procedures.
Cleanly redoing the exterior siding can be the hardest part of the job. Hopefully the new window isn't smaller than the one being taken out, because if it is smaller you are going to have to add new siding around the window.
The difficulty of doing this depends entirely on the details of the job, but expect it to be a challenging and time consuming project, especially the first time around.
