I got sooooooo lucky today! And, I’m convinced it’s because y’all were sending me so much positive energy for my birthday! Went to pick up my Jet contractor’s saw from the fix-it guy, and he asked (asked! like I might say “no”) if I’d like to buy a set of cast iron wings to replace my puny (and rather beat up) sheet metal wings.
Yes! I say, Yes! Got a pair of new cast iron wings for (here’s the mini-gloat) $30.00. Wow! Never would have gone looking for them, either.
Happy birthday to me, happy birthda….. (oh, not polite, sorry!) 🙂

Congratulations.... That saw is gonna be a lot nicer than you think once you get those new wings on it. Hope you had a wonderful day....I know I had fun...

Hellllo Steve, how'z the weekend going? Saw update here -- didn't expect to have time in the shop or on the computer, but my sig-o had to go back to the east side, as his 97-yr-old dad had to go into the hospital with pneumonia this morning.
Just got the motor mounted and aligned on the Jet, and fired it up briefly. Runs much smoother now, because among other things the motor lines up better with the arbor -- the stretchers (tie-rods) were so far out of whack before that the motor was kinda crooked. Haven't mounted the CI-wings yet, since my little router table attaches to the steel wing. Won't be long though! Have a question for ya: Will 24" of the power twist belt stuff suffice for the Jet, do you know?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Hi ya Jamie, I'm not sure about 24", I just buy it 10ft at a time. Just bought another 10ft today... Along with a,,,,, eat your heart out... new comercial grade BEISMEYER.. fence.. Gloat.... Gloat.... Gloat... O.K. I'm done. Seriously, the Jet uses about 4 feet but I buy an extra foot and make it 5. This leaves me enough for mistakes which I'm prone too. I pay about 6.00 per foot is that about what your paying?
Steve - in Northern California
Oooops, I forgot to multiple 24" by 2!! Dumb!
Look out! He's going nuts -- a Biesemeyer! Colore me Green!
Nobody around here carries these in stock, so I'll have to order on-line. Rockler's $5.99/ft -- for some dumb reason they don't keep it in stock at their store! I guess getting 4' might be cutting it a little close. Although, how exact would the length need to be (relative to the V-belt length)? Seems like there should be some leeway there, since the motor just hangs there.
The Mariners are almost done here, I've enticed my kitty back into the house (Cool Whip is the major bribe here -- otherwise known as "White Stuff") and my Kalua treat has about worn off, so I'll be heading out to listen to blues and test the table saw. Later! Ooo, have to feed the flying squirrels too.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Hey, its Saturday, you should be kickin back watchin the tube.. Whats up..Steve - in Northern California
Am watching the tube -- Mariner's have bases loaded (on an Ichiro bunt base hit), they're rallying from a 3-1 deficit. Go Mariners!
My sig-o had to leave this morning to help the family with his dad in hospital (see above) so my weekend's a little different than expected. I love crankin' up the Blues on Sat/Sun nights though, so will go out to the shop for awhile tonight with the radio not-quite-blaring.
It's now 3-2, only 2 more and we win!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
O.K. Sorry to hear about the sig-o's probs. Everything will be O.K.,,, trust me. Well, like you, I need to burn off some stress so its out to the shop for me also. Besides, I need a good excuse to run the new jointer for a 2s surface that I can run up against the new beis... Jeeze the darn tool barn cost me nearly a Grand this weekend. But thats O.K., I just got the inside track on a production cabinetry job... Oh yeah. pictures are comming as soon as I can afford batteries for the digi cam.Steve - in Northern California
Have fun! I'm still green :-) DigiCam -- no power supply? That $30 was well worth the price -- my old Minolta Dimage IV goes through batteries at an unbelievable clip.
Watch yo' fingers and happy ripping!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Ah shoot. It's too late to wake up the neighbors wit saws and stuff. I think I'll just head to the tube and hang out for a while. Call me if you want to talk.Steve - in Northern California
Bummer! I'm just assuming my neighbor can't hear the saw, but I suppose he might -- probably should ask the next time I see him. The other side is a church, about 300 yards away, a contractor across the street (with a brand new, 2-story shop himself, the Lucky Dog). Mostly will be tidying up anyway, they place has gotten scattered this week.
Hope your Sunday goes well. Congrats! on the job you bid and won!

PS: Thanks for the positive thoughts. I'm pretty sure everything will be OK. He may be 97, but he's a tough ol' coot, and extremely stubborn! forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Wow, I got so carried away I forgot to answer your questions. .. Well here we go.... The link belt should be the same diameter as your v belt. The tension will come when you lower the motor. If it stretches, which it will, just take a link out. This is why you want to start off a little long and then creep up on it. The link belt will wear out sooner than a v belt but the benifits far out weigh the cost of the replacement. This is why I buy 10ft and not just 5.Steve - in Northern California

Too cute... I want one.... No ... maybe not.. I only have a Japanese Maple..Steve - in Northern California
Ooops, it's probably a wee bit short! They nest around 20' up and more (and they are cute!). The tree he's in is probably 50 or 60' (it's actually 3 trees wound together). The biggest problem I have lately is there's a young racoon who has discovered the peanuts go out at dusk every night. Not being a gun person, I went and got a good sling-shot a couple weeks ago. Got him twice, and he's not been back since. Hah!
Carillo got thrown out at home, so on to the 9th inning. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
ya know what works good for racoon's -- Your gonna laugh --- just try putting out a old dead salmon, (for that matter, any old fish). They won't get near anything that is not fresh. Whoops, if you do that you gotta watch out for the black, aka garbage, bears. However, if you have some rotten apples they do put on quite a hilarious show.Steve - in Northern California
No bears around here that I know of. You know, they will get drunk on over-ripe berries. Or is that Gorillas, hmmmm don't remember. Happens to birds occasionally.
Oh dear, Mariners lost by 1 run. Pfui! Off to sing the blues. 'night!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

Sorry - a quote from the movie "It's a Wonderful Life". I pun as poorly as I wood-work.
Happy birthday Forest Girl, try to go out the forest today..., just kidding!! I saw an homemade Bandsaw, maybe you want to see that too, go to : http://www.aerocom.ws/bedair/Bandsaw4.html

Gee. that Steve is a pretty handy guy.Close enough for government work
Your'e right Roger. For myself, I'm looking to buy a Bandsaw in July, it's will be a General 490 15" or a GI 18", I don't know yet, the 490 have a 1 hp motor but the GI have a 1 1/2 hp..., I want to do some resawing!
Regards,
Peter42g
Thanks for the happy wishes Peter! Turns out, I'm within striking distance of several 100' trees anytime I'm in the house. Am pretty sure the lumber-value around here far outweighs the house-equity for this mini-abode I live in!
Quite a tool project, that bandsaw is. Wonder what the benefits are of making one yourself??forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Personal Satisfaction.... Wish I had those skills...Steve - in Northern California
Hi Forest Girl, I would need a bandsaw today, I'm building a plants'table for my wife, there is plants and flowers all around the house and the shop! My wife give me the "OK" to buy a bandsaw in July, so, imagine all the plants and flowers projects that I will build! Just kidding (again).
Pass a good day,
Peter42g
Great buy.
I have a question. Do you have any way to weigh one of the wings? I have had an on-going discussion about the value of cast iron wings vs the stamped steel wings. Always comes down to weight. When I called Jet, they could only tell me the shipping weight.
Shipping Weight is pretty close to acutal weight. The box and the styro foam doesnt add much. The difference between the steel and cast iron is 40 lbs if that helps. Steve - in Northern California
I can get a pretty close weight. Hold on a minute...
Looks like 26 lb each.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
PS: When you say "value" do you mean in the cost to Jet to make them, or value as an improvement to the saw as a woodworking machine, or something else all together?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Many justify the additional cost for cast iron wings in their extra weight and mass which may act as a vibration absorber/eliminator. The stamped steel wings on my Delta weigh quite a bit and I'm not sure that the weight difference between the cast and the stamped is that much. The "value" is the cost of the wings vs their reduction of vibration. Need to get to the shop and weight my wings.
BTW, thanks for the info......

Howie, I think there's another advantage to the cast iron -- it's flat. Although I can certainly get by with my stell wings, I look forward to not having any variation in the surface I'm sliding the wood along. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
My Delta stamped steel is flat too. The weight of my stamped steel wing is 11 pounds so the cast iron is considerably heavier. There may be something to the increased mass but I don't think my saw could run any smoother than it does already. Also, I could only use one wing as the other side has an extension table on it.
