Since everyone was so helpful helping me find Cypress in the Mass area how about Red/White cedar? I can buy it at a millwork lumberyard near me but it’s already dimensioned down to 3/4″. At that thickness it’s almost too light in weight and strength to use for Adirondack furniture. I’m hoping to find it a 4 quarter or 5 quarter in the rough.

If you're located in eastern MA, you might call Downes and Reader in Stoughton.
Thank you. Will do.There are more old drunkards than old doctors. Ben Franklin
If you're in North Eastern MA then check out Highland Hardwoods in Brentwood, NH. Even if it's a ride it's worth the trip at least once, it's 1.5hrs each way for me and I still go there when I need stock for an entire project.
Highland doesn't sell cedar anymore. I usually go to Northland for other varieties, which is down the street, much bigger, and significantly less expensive. Try them out. (603) 642-8275
495 North to exit 51B. 10.6 miles and go left onto Scotland Road then immediate right on Depot Road and they are on the right. There are more old drunkards than old doctors. Ben Franklin
wow, I thought Highland sold just about everything...thanks for the info!
Is northland the place that Highland used to be part of before they moved to their current loc? up the road a bit (in the direction of Brentwood Machine)?
I don't know if Northland and Highland used to be affiliated. Northland is huge, about the size of 6 Home Depot's. It's about 3-4 miles up 125 toward MassThere are more old drunkards than old doctors. Ben Franklin
No, Northland has nothing to do with Highland, They have a yard with dry kiln facility in Virginia as well. The main part of their business is export all over the world, the retail store in Kingson seems to be just a hobby.
Highly reputable company.
Hello,
has anyone been to all three, highland, northland and downes and reader? If so, thoughts? I use downes and reader, but are the other two better and bigger selection?
thanks joe p
I *think* I have been to all three, but I *know* that I've been to both Downs and Highland and greatly prefer Highland for their larger selection. Highland is setup much the same as Downs but is probably on the order of 4x-5x larger, plus they have a shorts area where you can pickup 3-4' boards at 20% off (domestics, exotics are still full price), which is great when you just need a few feet of something. I still run over to Downs (40min ride each way) when I need a board or two or am in a hurry, but if I need to get stock for an entire project then I spend the extra time and gas and head up to highland (1.5hr ride each way) because they almost always have exactly what I'm looking for. Another cool thing is that Highland will toss in discounts for random stuff like keeping the bins neat ;)
if you head up there don't forget to stop in at Brentwood Machine on the way home, great selection of new tools and the basement is an old tool lovers dream, lots of great old iron....
Thanks for the info. Does Brentwood Machine sell used machinery. Like a planer?
What town is Highland in? I live in northern RI, but I willing to take the ride when I need a fair amount of wood. Last time I was at Downes, I was driving home with 4 10' boards, <2 walnut, 2 yellow heart > and around $200.00 poorer, thinking to myself when did wood become so expensive. I had a huge supply of red oak, kiln dried from my own property that is coming to an end, so I did alot of projects with using that in mind. But now that I need to start building a supply of other species, I need to pay attention to price/quality.
thanks joe p
Brentwood Machine does sell used stuff, but most of it is OLD iron, I'm talking stuff from the 40s-60s; but they do have newer stuff sometimes. they have everything from table saws to Do-Alls to milling machines down there in the basement, if you like that type of thing it's great to just wander around for a bit.
Highland is in Brentwood NH...it's a good 1.5hr trip each way from my place in Medway, MA so it's probably 2hrs from northern RI :(. it's worth a day trip at least once just to check it out but with gas prices approaching diamond prices that gets harder to say :-/. you can check out their price list on their site at http://www.highlandhardwoods.com. I've found them to be about in line with Downs give or take a few cents, but Highland is a little more free and easy with the discounts and usually has a much better selection.
Call downes and reader first for the grade/price. Last time I bought there, I wound up paying more than my local Woodcraft for the same grade.
