Has anybody got some pictures or plans of a shop-built spindle steady? I’ve been trying to turn some 30″ (1.5 inch diamter) legs in maple and can’t keep the vibration under control. Trying to avoid spending big bucks on a commercial jig for a one-time use.

Check this out - I made one like it and works great I turned some 1 1/4 X 42in. spindles {back post for a Rocking Chair} Roller Blade Wheels work great.
I may try making one that is open so the tool rest could stick out past the jig.
Before I found this plan I made one from 2 large bearings that rode at the back of the spindle - it kind of worked until the spindle { Hickory 1 1/4 x 42 } shot straight up in the air at my face good thing It was running slow.
This is a safe jig it traps the spindle between 3 wheels and is easy to make.

Excellent. It looks pretty straight forward to make. I wonder if my son will notice the missing wheels from his skates. Maybe it's like lug nuts...if I just take one off each skate...naw still need one more. Hmmm my wife has a pair of those skates.
Thanks,
Mike
Hermann de Vries has plans for a slightly different steady rest at http://www.hdv.net/ (under Tools & Tips).

Thanks. His design is sort of industrial looking. The previous post also has an interesting design using in-line skate wheels.
