Hello,
I was wondering what would be a good book for a peson who wants to build his first chair? This chair would be like a dining chair. Does anyone have a particular book they would recommend? Thank you.

I have used the book by Jeff Miller,"Chairmaking & Design", Taunton for some chairs to go with tables for grandchildren. I found it very helpful.

I think Miller's book is one of the best for teaching you how to make a chair.
If you like the craftsman style, you should look at one of Robert Lang's books. He has plans drawn from original Stickley pieces, including chairs.

The Chairmaker's Workshop: Handcrafting Windsor & Post-and-Rung Chairs by Drew Langsner is a great book. Drew does a great job of explaining specific details of each step, setting up your shop, making tools and equipment for your shop and he gives specfic instruction on over a dozen chairs. This is primarily for working with hand-tools. Drew had spent nearly 30 years giving instruction and running Country Workshops on the NC - Tenn. border. It is a great place to go for a week of small class instruction in a drop-dead georgous place with awesome food.

In addition to Jeff Miller's book, he also has a one week workshop in his shop teaching chairmaking in the Chicago area. For $1000.00, it's well worth it for the hands on you'll get with him. Jeff's not only a great guy, and an accomplished woodworker, but he's also a very good teacher, as well. Unlike some of us, (lol), he has the perfect temperment for teaching and explaining.
I took his class seeking instruction on joinery for chairmaking, and learned soooo much more about 6 or 7 years ago.
He also teaches at the Woodcraft in Palatine, IL , if you're in the area.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I think I will order the books and look into the classes. Hopefully I'll get my chair going pretty quickly. Thanks again,
Chad
