Greetings,
I have an idea in my head ( wife is skeptical) that I would like to replace my old recliner with something I could hopefully build. I have seen the plans for the Morris chairs and that is the current forerunner but I am looking for some other possibilities. It is going to have to be something fairly nice in the end because the wife is pretty picky about furnishings. I have a fabric and upholstery guy buy my knowledge of furniture beyond tables and cabinets, toolboxes, workbenches and such is limited. Also something to keep in mind is that I am in layman’s terms a ” big sumbitch” 6’6″ and 300ish so it needs to be something with some bones. I am continuing to dig but any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Morris chair is a good option. There are designs and videos on FWW and there is a great video about how to upholster the seat also. Just look through FWW and you will find what you need. You can change the depth and width of the seat to fit your dimensions but don't change the seat height too much. Good luck, there are a few tricky parts with the through tenons on the arms but you will not be dealing with the angled stretchers that most chairs have. The Morris chair seat is at right angles. I am sitting in my Morris chair built 20 years ago in great comfort.
Would you consider a high end rocking chair. Beautiful design, very comfortable, no upholstery. Check out a Hal Taylor rocker (Haltaylor.com). He can provide you with templates and great instructions including videos.
Hal Taylor's Rocking Chair is great advice.
His other website us Rocking Chair University. He sells a book, plans, and a jig for the chair.
