I have a challenge for the finishing experts in you…
I’ve got a contract from my employer to make new workstations for our
new office expansion. All our existing furniture is made with
varnished MDF. We use the 1″ thick for table tops and 3/4″ for
shelving units and some other custom units. Water based varnish
(Varathane) has been used and the MDF preserved it’s light “beige”
tone.
The challenge is to build new furniture (tops and shelving units) and
minimize the time spent to finish the darn things. What kind of
product would you suggest to preserve the light tone and minimize the
time to apply it.
One thing for sure, we will spend the time to make the tables with the
older method but we are looking for a quicker solution for all the
shelving modules. We are looking more on preserving the color and seal
it against stains made by dirty hands, sweat, etc.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I would use something that could be easily sprayed. ML Cambell vinyl sealer and a couple coats of magnalac could be sprayed on quickly and easily. A conversion varnish could also be sprayed on quickly and would provide a very durable finish.
Skip the finish and make the pieces out of Melamine. You can get Melamine in just about any color from white to green to beige to granite speckled. Get some beige and just apply an edge moulding or varnish the visible edges. The melamine surfaces will not let anything stick to them so fingerprints etc won't show up after a quick swipe with a damp cloth.
