changing arbor hole size on saw blade…
hi all,
do you think it is possible to enlage the arbor hole on a saw blade accurately enough at home? i was thinking of using a step bit. i need to enlarge the hole from 5/8″ to 20mm. is the risk of screwing it up too great? whaddaya think?
thanks, kit

i am not an expert but if is important to you then go and have a machinist enlarge the hole. it shouldn't cost all that much. they are equiped to do it right. good luck
Good Lord, Pooch, use yur haid. Slightly off balance razor sharp wheel spinning at thousands of rpms? Hmmm... Let's ask Three-Finger Levine what he thinks. He'd give ya a thumb's up if only....
Seriously, machine shop (would they assume the liability?) or new saw blade. Do the math. It's cheap compared to ......

Absolutely NOT!! That is an accident looking for a place to happen!
I have been in the machining business for 30 yrs and can tell you that this operation requires high precision. The arbor hole must be accurately indicated and the hole should be bored to +.oo1 -.ooo.
Probably cheaper to buy a new blade.
Aahhhh, the Pooch is back and better than ever. Buy a new blade.........
Whats the blade for? as in what machine to fit.
Sounds to me like you might be trying to put a 10" blade with a 5/8" hole on a machine with a 1" arbor.. Maybe trying to save some money by using a blade you already have on a saw designed for a 12" blade? I'm no expert by any means but I do know that blades are tensioned and I would think that changing the hole would require that the blade be re-tensioned no matter how perfect it was.
Does anybody else think this might be the case?

sos you all don't think i'm a complete a**....
just a tiny idea in the back of my mind, it seemed stupid to me too (especially after i posted it of course.) so, have a good laugh at my expense.
i have one very nice blade, a tenryu gold metal, that i would like to use on the inca 259 i recently purchased. i called a local sharpening place and was told they could do it, but only in standard (non-metric) increments (huh?). i think i will send it to forrest.
keep laughin'

Stupid people don't ask questions..Nope, you don't fit that category...Steve - in Northern California
While you are at it, get a bushing so you can use it on other saws.
any idea where such abushing could be found? with the right bushing, i could buy 1" arbor blades instead of having them custom drilled. my arbor is 20mm...
thanks.
You could probably go to any machine shop and get one made. It may cost you $25, but you will spend that on the first two blades you have modified.

Do a search for
"table saw" bushing
on Google or your favorite search engine. I found several vendors in the first two pages of results, including one that sells Freud bushings. That leads me to suspect that other blade manufacturers may also sell bushings.
Any good sharpening shop should be able to supply these as well as Forest etc. Shouldn't cost more than a few bucks each. Doesn't anyone go to the links page? A lot of things people are looking for could be found there in a lot of cases. I remember seeing a place called Bull's sharpening that had bushings for $2.50

Hi: Vanderpooch:
Like Kim, I've had standard 5/8" blades enlarged to 20mm for an Inca saw. My local sharpening service, Portland Saw Works, does this as part of their normal business and charges about $5.00 . I've been doing this for the past 18 years and never had a problem. Unlike Kim, I've only had a problem with a hole being out of center once, and that was corrected by having the blade resharpened.
