Hello everyone,
Looking for some advice on refinishing a new piece. My wife and I really liked the new entertainment center we just bought but the color needs to be darker. “You can fix that can’t you, honey?”, she says. Of course, I respond while puffing out my chest, “Shouldn’t be a problem.” So, now we’ve got it and it’s not too bad the way it is, but, if there were a good way (good means not too hard or time consuming) to do it I’d like to know.
I’m thinking of placeing a couple of coats of dark shellac since the stuff will adhere to most anything. Dyes and tints are in the back of my mind, but what would the vehicle be? Anyone have any thoughts? I’ve got a couple months to think about it, it’s too hot here in N. Va to put the piece outside and give it a go. Thanks for the input!

Erich--I'm no pro but a little addition info would help those in the know give accurate recommendations. Do you know what the top coat is? Do you plan to spray, brush or wipe?
I assuming its finished with a stain and sealed.
If it is sealed you can darked or shift color in small steps by glazing. A glazing compound is used, either premixed by tinted with color and is applied then wiped off leaving a thin film of color. A sealer coat is used between glazes--I use de-waxed shellac. Once the color/shade is achieved top coat with compatible finish.--Bruce
Hello k9,
I was wondering when somebody was going to ask me what the original finish was. I'd already have that info for you, but the piece is still in the delivery stages (I didn't think the store would appreciate me wiping alcohol or lacquer thinner on their floor model :) ). When it getis in next week that's my first step and I'll fill everybody in. Until then, I'm still taking suggestions and I appreciate yours! Thanks...
Erich
