charge for installation of crown molding
I’ve installed crown molding for friends and relatives on a “freebie” basis. A contractor has asked me to install crown on a renovation project on a “paying” basis, and I’m trying to come up with price per foot. Any suggestiions?

I charge by the foot and joint, this allows me to get paid fairly for the work involved
I can't tell you what to charge, I think that depends on your personal situation. Although I would share my recent experience installing 5" poplar crown with dental molding for a retired judge.
It was a small room, plaster walls and 10' ceilings. The morning went well, after setting up and completing half the room the Lady of the house brought in homemade sweetrolls and complimented me on the progress. And then the other shoe dropped. The judge came in and was visibly upset. He informed me that the crown was upside down, that the dental was supposed to be on the cieling.
After a futile attempt to convince his Honor that it was indeed installed correctly and that a coped corner would not work coming 38 degrees off the cieling, I was told he did not care how I do it and was instructed to tear it off and start over.
thank heavens for paint grade crown molding!
the moral of the story; figure your price and double it

Oh man, sorry to hear that. Another classic case of the homeowner thinking they know what's going on. Besides what do you know, you're just a dumb woodworker. (that last sentence was just something I say to myself if I find myself in those situations) John E. Nanasy.
Its going to kill a day so charge for a day!
Don't get me started on pricing crown! Having eaten a few of my earlier jobs I say charge and then add some. Paintgrade types can be a major pain so dont think you can get away with to much in the price there. My best advise is to do the best job you can and charge as thow you have just done a 5 piece. Guys and gals dont forget to cut yourself out some cheater blocks that you can place behind the real stuff to crank them down properly. It will save a ton of time and aggravation! ..pike..
65cents a square foot for one piece crown here in nc (measure the rooms involved) add app 15cents more for built up crowns. They might like to prime and paint it first
geoff, you can come to my house any time. I can't put it up myself for 65 cents a square foot.. I have a 12 by 14 room that you will do for $25? ( 6 inch wide crown of course.). Come on down. I have all kinds of work for you to do!!!!
there is a new house going up that I'm putting entertainment center in , the man putting up the crown charges by the foot ---up to 4 5/8" CROWN UP TO 8' in height is $1.00 above 8' $1.50 .- larger crown with backers are $2.00 pr. ft . hope this gives you something to go by
