I’ve recently been convinced about the value of having one of these. However, the only one I can seem to find is the Lie Nielson, with a price tag of $175! Can anyone recommend a $75-ish models out there?
Thanks,
David

Check eBay for an old Stanley or Sargent
You might find a good old one on eBay. The LN is worth the money. I've had one since they first came out and use it a lot.

Fragile
Hi,
I have the Millers Falls version of that plane. I think I paid about $90 for it. It can be quite handy at times. Because of the design of that type of plane, they are inherently quite fragile. I doubt mine would survive a trip off the bench to floor. I bought mine in person from a reputable dealer I know well, so I was able to examine it in detail prior to purchase. If you did go the ebay route, be very careful examining the pictures, particularly on the non-rabbet side; you will want to watch for cracks or repairs. Also make sure the auxillary fence screws can come out, can be tightened down, and haven't chewed up the casting.
The Lie Nielson ductile iron version is a lot stronger and durable than the antique version and is probably worth extra cost. Had I not found the one that I got, I would likely have gone with the LN one, and I normally would never buy a new plane. The only new ones I would consider are the oddball ones like this, the side rabbit, 271 router type, and the other ones that the collectors bid the price up more than their actual user worth.
Take a look at free woodworking plans and projects here, you will it very interesting and innovative.
