Check your planer !!
This morning I was planning some really nice Bacote I got yesterday..
8/4 by 48 inches…
Well, It WAS a nice hunk of wood…
About half way on the first pass all hell broke loose…
Planner came to a screeeecchin’ halt.
Had to cry a bit… It seems a small nut fell off of the depth adjustment and fell in there…
DAMN!
The blades wiped out and one of the feed rollers… AND the Becote has a Hex Nut stuck in it…
Folks.. Get yourself some Locktite and CHECK YOUR MACHINES!!!

Ouch, Will. That hurts all the way to here. How much down time are you thinkin' it's gonna take?
Will,
Sorry to hear about the event, and thanks for posting it.
The problem is probably unique to the type of machine you were using, what make and model do you own? Also which nut, if it isn't obvious, came loose?
John W.
John, isn't it obvious? The loose nut is WILL!!! Hahahahahahahahaaaaaaaa
But, what can you expect, he is weary after fighting off all of those old ladies.Woody
The loose nut is WILL!!! ...I AGREE!Anyway, I was asked what nut.. I think I said height adjustment but it was really the cutting head locking lever. The lever is mounted to the locking assembly shaft with a screw and a lock-nut.It was the locknut that came loose and fell.. I have no idea how it got inside because everything is pretty well covered up by safety covers. Must have worked itself down in there somehow! Also asked what was the brand. It is a 13" Pro-Tech.. Yes.. A Big-Box brand which I have had for several years and had served me well.. I have a DeWalt..DW735 which two speed and has three cutter blades. My big box one is one speed and just two knives.. Yes the DeWalt has more power but I see very little difference in the cuts. 'Snipe' may be somewhat reduced on the DeWalt but hard to say because not every stick will 'snipe'..The Big-Box one was 1/3 the cost and works about the same as far as I'm concerned.. However I NEVER make any cuts larger than 1/32 at a time.. Both will make larger cuts but I'm stuck in my ways and would rather make multiple passes..Oh I forgot.. the DeWalt is quieter but they both are 'screamers!'
The loose nut is WILL!!! ...
Sorry Will, I couldn't resist -- and I knew you would be the first to agree!Woody
Sorry?? I thought it was funny!
he is weary after fighting off all of those old ladies.HAY! I can't help it just old ladies own then old houses I made doors for.. I'll bet I'm the only wood door maker that had to wear a suit and tie making a door in one old ladies house... She was something..Sent me back home 'to dress properly'.. If it were NOT SO FUNNY I may have gotten pissed at her...But she payed WELL so I put up with her...
Holy Smokes, Will, what a drag! Glad to hear the nut didn't come flyin' out atcha, but sorry to hear about all the ruined parts and wood. Definitely looking forward to any other info you can provide, per questions above.

Oohh Gawd Jesus, for ForestGirl's sake please, please don't let it be a Grizzly.
Boyo,
You are going to be struck by Lightning! LOL
For our sake, please get back on your medication. You really do need to give it a rest, Cstan, and quit spoiling other peoples threads with your vendetta.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
I borrowed one of Charles's LN # 7's, as he has many and I was planin some Hard Maple boards, about 13 ft long and they were 13 quarters thick and 13 inches wide. This plane was so well tuned, it took off a whole one quarter, with a single pass. While I was producing a perfect #I type shaving, my Neighbor, "City Girl" was power planing some Walnut with her 15" Grizzly.
One of them nuts on the Grizzly came loose, shot right through the Walnut, then hit her cigarette, so only the filter was left hangin in her lips. The nut then went through the roof, making the upwards path of travel, as found in a sinusoidal curve. Once it passed the zero axis on it's downwards motion, it hit my roof, went right through the tiles and bounced off one of my Budweiser bottles, leaving shattered glass in it's path, with beer dripping all over my bench. I was watchin my cat at this time, who looked at the nut, with a form comparing to a stud muffin, who has just spiked all his hair with the latest gel.
The nut was making it's second sinusoidal curve, downwards and hit my maple board, while I was pushing this LN #7, at around 13 ft per second. The nut got caught between the board, ruined the board and the LN iron and the body. This brought the LN plane to a screeching stop, creating enough friction to set my gloves on fire. Fortunately City Girl came a runnin to my rescue and put out the fire with a foam extinguisher.
As this whole problem was Grizzly's fault, City Girl decided to sell her 15" planer, but because these Far Eastern machines loose value so quickly, it only paid half the value of the #7 LN.
For now we have both decided that Charles is right, only hand tools from here onwards, but please is anyone willing to make a donation, so we can pay him back for his ruined #7 LN?
I hope OSHA stays out of this.
You definitely win the prize for Creative Writing, Willie. Tooooo funny! Thanks for a good laugh -- I could visualize the whole thing!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Daaangeeeit, Will, I forgot to send suitable commiserations on this terrible happening.
Normally, when this sort of thing happens to somebody not on one's favourite list, one says "it couldn't have happened to a better person".
However, this is not applicable in your case.
But hey, look on the bright side-is this not a good reason to get yourself a more flash machine? (and avoid any with names beginning with the letter F or B).
Hi Metod, how are you?! Cstan went off the deep end the last few days and trust me, his post wasn't meant to be funny. If you'll notice all the deleted posts above? I suspect, but don't know for sure, that he got so down and dirty he ended up getting himself censored, not an easy feat around here.
Sorry if you feel deprived, LOL! Hope you are well otherwise. :-)

Hi Forestgirl,
I think you may be oversensitive-I can't see how Stanf's post can be anything but humorous-I'm sure he is just teasing you, as everybody knows that that Grizz planer is good value for the money and performs well especially for people who are prepared to maintain it properly.
Didn't you recently compare him to a certain personality ostensibly specialising in finishes-I mean , really<G>
However, if I am missing something, please excuse me.
Whatever. Can't say I've ever seen any indication that Cstan has a sense of humor, especially vis a vis your's truly here, but I think it's time to close the cover of the book and forget about it. Will George has got to still be having nightmares about his planer, and we need to give him some comfort and support.
Cheers to all!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Will George has got to still be having nightmares about his planer..
Not really.. MY NICE HUNK of wood though!I have worked around all kinds of machines all my life.. THEY BREAK!
Even the multi million dollar ones...NOT happy about it but 'such is life'..Just a hint for everyone to check their tools.
.... I SHOULD know better!
Het Will,
Can we see a picture of your latest creation? You know , a sort of "before" and "after"? A post mortem?
Will George has got to still be having nightmares about his planer, and we need to give him some comfort and support.
I was going to say something funny but decided to let this speak for itself.
It's a machine, Jamie. It is an inanimate object. I'm sure there was no suffering when it died.

I'll stick with my Boice-Crane that was made in 1939 thank you.
Had a similar problem with the planer about ten years ago, but the hand ground knife flying out of the shaper is my fondest ww'ing memory. Jimmy.
