This is a bit obvious, but a green bowls tape is handy and more accurate than using bits of scrap etc to check diagonals are equal because it is made to measure, having points at each end.
As in the game of green bowls.

OK, Mufti, what's the secret? I Googled "green bowls tape" and found a bunch of UK eBay listings, but that was it. Then went to eBay and searched a little more. Never did see a pointy little tape. What aren'tcha telling us??
The game hasn't really caught on in the US yet, LOL!
I am not surprised it has not caught on with those silly prices. Try bowlstopgear.co.uk.
My measure is old with a small case. The tape end flips down and the tape locks, the case end has a protuding pointer so the comparisons are accurate and easy.
More obvious to me... the handiest and and accurate enough thing to measure diagonals is the self storing tape measure that fits in my apron pocket.
Mufti,
Are we talking lawn bowling, or the like?

lawn bowling! I just loved Lawn Darts! Untill I was hit with one!
Yes.
Not sure I understand..
OK.. so no actual measurement you can read but an adjustable pointed hardwood 'story stick' WILL NOT FIT IF the angle to some fixed reference it is out of square.. If you do not force it in!
I find one very accurate. Especially with my old eyes!
