Hi all,
I am checking out a used bandsaw later this week. The owner thinks it is a Jet JWBS-14CS, but unable to confirm. The description is: “Jet 14 inch bandsaw with riser block, carter guides, and 5 Timberwolf blades (4 unused) for sale. It also has a mobile base. This is the closed bottom version”
He’s asking $450. throwing in some air dried walnut to boot (about 100 BF).
I have heard good reviews of the new grizzly G0555 which with shipping and tax would be about the same (sans the riser block, extra blades, carter guides, mobile base and the walnut!). I am a novice with bandsaws. I have read Carter guides are excelllent. I know nothing about blades. The rough lumber definitely sweetens the deal.
any feedback? sounds like a good deal to me so far. anything I should be looking at when buying a used bandsaw?
thanks for the feedback! -Eric in L.A.

Sounds like a sweetheart deal, so long as the bandsaw is in halfway decent shape, hell, even if it isn't. If you determine you aren't interested, I know some folks who would be - namely me, myself and I.
Take care.
Me too! Hard to go wrong with that one.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

Walnut...Did you say walnut..?? Ha... Check the machine throughly. If you don't know what to look for, try to take a friend that does if that is feasible. This is a h-ll of a deal with the WALNUT and blades, if the machine is in proper working order. My first question to seller would be, why are you selling?
Now, the part about not knowing what kind of B/S it is. Why?? Jet's are white and should have Jet placards. Hmmmm... Look a gift horse in the mouth. If you're in doubt get the serial # and model # by phone and call Jet technical to idenify b-4 you make the trip. It that pans out, check that serial and model when you get there. Unless this is an estate sale or something, I can't imagine why they cannot idenify clearly as a Jet.
Good luck and post, you have my curiousity up. Ha..

I'm thinking this is one of those "you snooze, you lose" situations. If the saw runs, it and the blades and the walnut are all going to be gone to the early bird. Short of it being a rusty pile of twisted metal, can't imagine not taking the package.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

I agree to a point. After reading treedust post as to he knows saw and owner, it's a great deal. Now you can explain this one to me. This is why I said check it out.
According to treedust, the owner didn't use it much but wanted a bigger B/S for re-saw. He bought a Luguna. Pretty smart, right. Sounds like he had some knowledge of B/S's to pull that off. But, he had purchased the Jet and didn't know for sure what kind of saw he purchased and owned..??
Now maybe I am of the suspicious type, but my common sense would tell me to check it out throughly to ensure that it is the sweet deal it seems to be. My first thoughts would be that the B/S might not really belong to the seller. I'm not going to support a thief no matter what the price.
Obviously treedust knows the owner and all is well. I will wonder in amazement for the remainder of my life how you can purchase a B/S that is probaly marked Jet and not know what you have purchased. Ha....Maybe a few ground up banana peels in a pipe back in the 60's? Sounds to me, if that is the case; someone is about one toke over the line sweet jesus....grin < >

Yo Sarge,
Just so you don't spend your days wondering in amazement, I believe Eric was trying to say that the owner didn't know the exact model number of the saw. The owner knew very well that it was a Jet with the enclosed stand. Now the last thing Eric wants is for every woodworker in L.A. to try to beat him to the deal, so I will shut up.

Hi All,
Thanks for clarifying that rick. I was referring to not knowing the exact model, the owner did know it is a JET. I checked out what I believe is the exact model with the riser block and mobile base at a woodworking store up Rosemead in Pasadena. If the thing runs decently, I am in. I will take the advice and check out what you all mentioned. I'll let ya' know how it turns out. Thanks a lot for the input. I definitely have more confidence in checking it out now.-E

Thanks for the clarification. Had me wondering..Ha.. This is a great deal. Almost worth it for the walnut. I'm sure that no one will get their first, so he's got plenty of time.
BTW, I'm posting mobile in my vehicle. Just rolling out of Dallas west-bound. Making inter-change off I-10. Do you possibly know which is the correct Inter-state to L.A. grin<>
Eric....Go look at the B/S soon.. ha..

Hi All,
I bought the B/S tonight. It is "all that and a bag of chips"! What a great deal. runs smooth, has a few dings but has all the bells and whistles. The 100 bf of walnut is super. Thanks for all your input!-EL
Eric
Darn it... I just made the L.A. city limits.. Will follow your tracks as you may have dropped a piece of that walnut on the way home. Ha....
Good man for jumping on it. You got a super deal and I know you're excited. Have fun playing with the new toy!!

WOW!!!! Congratulations. You are one lucky dude!
Now, lemme warn you about that walnut -- Sarge, ToolDoc and Dennis are not to be trusted. If you have a junk-yard dog, post him nearby. Be especially alert between 1am and 4am, and show them no mercy, LOL!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

You just ruined your chances with the big Xmas gift I had planned for you. he....... BTW, thanks for the tip when you have the most walnut security. Try to work around those hours when I'm cruising your hood looking for the ever-elusive Walnut mother-lode. Ha.....

Eric,
You'll have to let us know how this works out. The air dried walnut is something special alone. You may want to look at some tool reviews to get more familiar with whats out there, it may help in determining the make and model, but also whether or not that really matters (if its not a Jet for some reason). I'm not sure about bandsaws, but most of the smaller jointers are basically the same machine, painted a different color. Go to http://www.toolseeker.com/reviews.htm.
Hi Eric,
I know the bandsaw and the walnut you are referring to (the owner is John, right?). I'm not affiliated with the owner, just bought some walnut from him a couple weeks ago. He mentioned the bandsaw after I paid for the wood. Now if he had offered 100 bf of the walnut with the saw, I would have jumped on it. I don't need the saw, as I have a 20", but with 100bf of walnut, that's a sweet deal. The saw is in fact a Jet with a closed stand, with riser block, Carter guides and mobile base as you mentioned. It was in pieces when I saw it, probably for transport. He mentioned that he bought a Laguna because he wanted more power for resawing. As with any used bandsaw, check the castings for cracks with your eyes and ears. Check the top and bottom wheels for damage; make sure they turn smoothly and they don't wobble. If possible, run it with the blade and cut some wood; it should run smooth and quiet. The saw looked to be in near new condition, so I bet it's a-ok, but just make sure there is no damage from moving it around. Also, see if you can get the original guides as well. They are better for cutting green wood. If you don't go for it, I know how to get 100BF of walnut for free, just for reselling a bandsaw! Good luck and let us know how it goes.
