i’m in ct and looking for a place to buy some decent cherry. i see it at local woodworker stores, but it really doesn’t look good in quality or color. there used to be a fairly good outlet in manchester, but that is gone. all that said, i really don’t have space to store 200 bf at a time. i try to buy enough for one or two projects at a time. shorts are generally fine for me too. any suggestions out there?
thanks, greg

try to find a small mill in your area and if you can find one they usually know who else is in the area in the same business
It seems most mills tend to harvest certian kinds of trees only i noticed
Check out Kellogg Hardwoods in Bethel, CT.
Greg,
Try these guys. Nice selection -- good people -- easy on, easy off of 91 in Enfield. They'll sell you as much or as little as you need.

thanks mike, i'll check them out. website looks promising.
I forgot to mention Harris in Manchester -- they may be closer to you. They're an architectural shop that also sells hardwoods.http://www.harrisent.com/
harris is the outlet that i used until a year ago or so when they stopped selling to the public.
Guess it's been a while since I got anything there. I didn't realize they weren't selling to the public anymore. There's a place in Glastonbury called Connecticut Hardwoods -- same deal as Harris, woodworking shop that will sell you hardwood and veneer plywood etc. They're much smaller than Harris with a more limited selection. I think Hardwood Outlet in Enfield is your best bet. Their main business is selling wood (they do some millwork also), and have a ton of everything. They plane and finish one edge on anything you buy if you want at no additional cost.A couple more you may want to check out. They're both a bit of a haul, but well worth the trip if you have the time.Forest Products Associates, Greenfield, MA -- (Great people, good prices, large selection)

oh man! i'm glad i asked, those two in ma look soooo tempting. i often go up to the shaker village and the shaker museum in ny. those lumber suppliers would just be another great reason to go there! in the mean time i'll check out the enfield one too.
thanks so much, greg
Mike, those places DO look great... do you know of any close(r) to Boston?
Thanks,
Matt
Matt,I don't know of any up that way, but you may be able to find something at:http://www.woodfinder.com/If you do make the trip out to Berkshire Products in Sheffield, you'll want to stop at Berkshire Veneer in Great Barrington (http://www.berkshireveneer.com). It's a small place that does veneer only, but the stuff he has will knock you out. The owner's name is Ben Barrett and he's one of the nicest, most knowledgeable guys you'll ever meet. Most of his business is with big architectural shops, but he really enjoys working with the small furniture guys. I don't do anything with veneer, but plan to get a press someday, and he's the first guy I'm going to see.
Get yourself a sales tax number. Even if you don't sell anything you can just file all 'zeros'when reporting your monthly or quarterly saled tax. That'll get you into some doors that are closed to non-professionals, and you don't have to be a pro or have a business license to get a sales tax number in most states. If you are only purchasing for yourself you can declare the purchase on the reporting form as 'purchased for use' and pay the tax.John
Greg: Not sure where in Connecticut you are, and trying to go East to West can be a real challenge, as you know, but there is a great hardwood supplier called Barrette's in Thompson, CT, just off I-395. Ben Barrette and his family run a real nice, old-school yard, no web-site, as far as I know. But they set furniture grade wood apart and like to cater to furniture makers. They have milling services, too. 129 Robbins Road, Thompson, CT, near exit 97, rte 44, Putnam. 860-928-9373.
