I live in Michigan and we seem to have a lot of different kinds of Cherry trees in the state, i.e. Pin Cherry, Choke Cherry, etc. When you buy Cherry wood for furniture making, what type of Cherry tree does this wood come from. I’ve heard that it is from Black Cherry but the only Black Cherry that I’m aware is what grows in the Michigan orchards.

David,
Prunus serotina is the Black Cherry that is harvested for timber, the cherry you buy at the lumber yard. Pin cherry, P. pennsylvanica and Choke cherry, P. virginiana do not grow large enough to be of any commercial value. They are considered shrubs, since they generally will not attain a height over 25'. Although they are commonly found being used as landscape ornamentals.
