I’m looking for a catch typically used on cedar chest that catches when the lid is closed and can be opened by pushing a button. This button also can be locked. I can find lid catches which must be locked and/or opened with a key but can’t find the style I’m looking for. (Looked in Rockler, Woodcraft, Van Dyke’s). I’m using this on a small desk/table that I’m building in which the lid can be opened for quick storage of pens, pencils etc. I want the lid secure but easily opened, e.g. push the button.

Try Woodcraft, Rockler etc. They all have them.
Midwood ,If you can't find exactly what you want, use a touch latch
These are used on secret doors or panels that don't show any hardware.
It is attached with just screws and when closed, it latches in place a slight push to further close the door/panel makes the door pop open. The better manufacturer is called Glynn Johnson another good name is Ives'
Google up pushlatches touch latches or secret latches Steinmetz

Thanks for the input. The ones you suggest would work on vertical doors but since this is a lid for a library desk, i.e. horizontal, and would have pressure on it, I'm not sure how it would stay latched. I will, however, look at these and see if its a fit.

Mid,These are rugged latches and employ strong springs .
There are available by the same manufacturer , Auxialiary' Pushers' for just your application. Steinmetz
