I’m about to start building a Cheval Mirror. I need one and one quarter inches finished material (Cherry). I have one inch material in shop. Would this project look ok or good if I glue pieces together? If so, should the pieces be the same thickness or, for example, one piece be 1/2 inch and the other 3/4 inch? Appreciate any ideas. Thanks, A griffee

Depending on the cherry, some logs can have quite a bit of variation from side to side or top to bottom. If you don't have a choice, why not using the glue line as a design element. Two equal pieces of stock from the same log (to have the best color match) with the grain converging or diverging at the glue line. Or you could separate the 2 equal pieces with a thin, contrasting line made by laminating a veneer to one of the surfaces and then gluing them together. The bottom line, don't fight the glue line, but use it to your advantage. (Could make a variation with three equal pieces separated by thin veneer lines or use 1/8" thick stock pieces - the possibilities could be endless).

Thanks. I can use the glue line on the frame and possibly will. Can't use it on the post as those will be turned. I can get the frame out of same tree as I have a stack of rough cut from a large log. Thanks again, Agriffee
Two unequal thickness pieces sounds risky to me. You might want to use the Advanced Search button near the top of the left frame to search for the phrase balanced construction. We had a lively debate (read that as a screaming fight) here several months ago on the topic.
Thanks. I'll be sure to plane down evenly on both sides. I read the messages re balanced construction. Very interesting. Thanks again, Agriffee
