To All,
I’m looking for a sawmill in Illinois to cut some elm I have for a table top. My stock is two (2) rough-cut (chain saw rips) quarter-sections of about a 24 inch diameter log about 8-10 foot in length. Would like to have it cut into 8 quarter slabs.
If anyone has knowledge of a sawmill in this aproxomate area I would be very appreciative to receive this information. Am searching the web in the meantime.
Thanks in advance.
Phillip

There is a saw mill at Brainard and 138 St just west of the Indiana border, sorry can not remember the name.
Jim,
Thanks for the information. Haven't found anything of value in the phonebook. I live in Oak Park and their (our) phonebook is no help in this respect. Hopefully I'll be able to find the name of the sawmill that you mentioned.
I appreciate your time.
Regards,
Phillip
Phillip; try this
Calumet Harbor Lumber and Sawmill

Good luck,

Jim,Thank you VERY MUCH for this information. Especially the phone number. I will call them today. It's AMAZING how this forum works.I've hauled this elm from El Paso, TX (where I worked for Chevron), to my home in Las Cruces, NM, and now to Oak Park, IL where we now live. So I HAVE to make something with it to show for all of this hauling 'round. Moving companies charge by the pound so this wood should be very pricey by now. Luckily we did not have to pay the movers, but I do want to make a trestle table for our dining room with it. However, before I can do that it needs to be cut into workable slabs.Regards,
Phillip
Call Owl Hardwood and they may be able to give you a name of a sawmill. Heck, they might even do it also.
Cheers!

Dark Magneto,Thanks for taking your time to reply. You helped me out several months ago when I was searching for apple-ply. You and others recommended Owl and I went to their store in Lombard. However, I had NO idea that they had sawmill capabilities (if that is what you were implying). This does make sense though. You can be sure that I will give them a call.Regards,
Phillip
Phillip,
I have never been to the Owl store in Lombard, but the location in Des Plaines is HUGE. They have an enormous shop at the Des Plaines location. I bet they can help you out.
Cheers!Dark Magneto
I called wood-mizer and they gave me a list of people that bought their product and provide sawer services. It worked great but it may not be cost-effective for a small amount of wood.
PhillipB- There is a sawyer in Woodstock, Illinois, called the GC Mill. He is right on Route 14. He mills all my logs for me, and charges by the board foot. He'll mill 1 log, or 50. If interested, post me back, and I'll dig up his # tomorrow for you.

If you don't have any luck in the Chicago area, there's a place near Kenosha called Kettle Moraine Hardwoods at I-94 and 7 Mile Rd. (262)835-9212 They can saw logs into dimensional lumber. They also will haul and mill logs for a fee and as I understand it, they will more or less trade lumber for the logs.
