(Note: After writing this, I wasn’t sure if it fell under the category of “promotion” rather than “announcement,” but since it doesn’t involve “selling” or any monetary gain, I’m now third-guessing what I’ve written and thinking I might be being too hard on myself. Let me know… if it’s breaking the agreed-upon rules of Knots, I’ll delete this message.)
This is extremely last minute, I know, but I just realized that it might be worth mentioning that 24 members of the Chicago Furniture Designers Association will be showing works in a group space at the Lincoln Park Home and Garden Show this weekend, May 10th and 11th, 2003.
Not your typical show — and yes, you’ll be able to get information on leafless gutters and triple-paned windows, if you so desire! — but it will definitely be an opportunity to see a lot of very fine, innovative work from some excellent area furnituremakers, all under one roof. Roughly 75-100 pieces will be on display, if my math is correct. For much of the work the primary medium is wood, but there are a number of works made of or incorporating metal, concrete, textiles, etc. I was helping set up this morning, and was awed by nearly everything on display. A very friendly bunch, too, so if you do come, bring your questions.
The show is being held at the DePaul University Athletic Center, 2300 N. Sheffield, in Chicago. The hours are 10-6 Saturday, 10-4 Sunday. I’ll be there… as a new furnituremaker, this will also be the first such public display of some of my new designs. (Pics to be posted in the Gallery, most likely next week.)

Sounds good to me, David. Just wish I could make it to Chicago!

Thanks for the tip...I'll try to visit sometime this weekend!
While you're there, have a Demon Dog...while you still can. This hot dog stand under the "el" tracks at Fullerton (just around the corner from the show) is legendary, but slated for demolition when the CTA renovates the "el" platform later this year.
The Chicago Design Show at Merchandise Mart in late October or early November is another show worth considering, either as an exhibitor or as a visitor.

Think I saw that place on a PBS documentary (Really!). Is that the one owned by the manager of some big rock group and has a guy in a tux out front?
The owner is Peter Schivarelli. The band is Chicago. The band got their start as students at DePaul.

Ah yes, Demon Dogs... when I moved to Chicago in 1987, that was part of my initial "must-eat" tour of the city. Many pounds later, I'm still working my way through the restaurant list!
(For those of you not familiar with Chicago, eating is the primary form of exercise AND entertainment during the cold winters. I call it the "fattening-up season" -- I think there's one restaurant for every man, woman and child. Thank god for summer and the lakefront running paths!)

I am going to take a wild guess at this. But are you still at Bauhaus?

Hey Tony, it was nice to meet you in person at the show. Pete and Clay, you too. Thanks for dropping by,

My pleasure!
CFDA had 25% of the show floor with over 20 members exhibiting their designs. There were some familiar faces from the group, and an impressive array of furniture! It's great to see the group thriving...continued success to all!
And I had lunch at Demon Dog! (For the record: mustard, relish, onions and sport peppers. No ketchup.)

Thanks, the pleasure was all mine. There really was some great stuff there. Well worth the time.
I think it's a cardinal sin to eat a hot dog in Chicago with ketchup on it.
It's OK for the CONSUMER to put anything on a hot dog.
I just think it's plain wrong for the hot dog VENDOR to put ketchup on the dog.
It's all right dere...in da rules o' ett-a-kit fer dressin' yer dog!
