I was unpacking the Kohler Shower Receptor that I had purchased a few months ago, which is cast iron and white porcelain, and was horrified to see that the porcelain had chipped off on one section. The broken-off piece is about a foot long and two inches wide. I had the unit stored in the original carton and had not dropped anything on it. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it just scrap now, or is there something that can be done? At $550, it’s a big pill to swallow!
Thanks,
Jack

Jack,
I know the feeling... can't help much except to say on the 'This Old House' series they have taken old cast iron tubs and refinished those beautifully. I think they used a place here in MA. You might send 'Ask TOH' an e-mail, call a recycler for a referral. good luck

I remember that episode. I absolutely love those old claw-foot tubs! That refinish place had some truly huge old tubs that were worth a lot of $$$. They did fantastic work too. As I recall, there was one really long one that had a huge mural on the side.

When I was a 'young'un ' Saturday night was bath night in the old tub with the scary feet. After I was all clean....I would let the water out, soap up the sides and slide... a simpler time for sure...
Sounds like fun. <G>

Kevin
Return it?
Contact Kohler and the place where you ordered from. My past experance with Kohler with damaged goods has been very good. Just explain to them why it sat in the box for so long.
Thanks for the comments. I contacted Kohler and the company that I purchased it from, Faucets.com, and while they were sympathetic, no help. So, I'm kicking around the idea of chipping off all the porcelain and epoxying tile to the cast iron. Any thoughts on this?

Hello,
Check with your plumbing suppliers about repair people. I cracked my fiberglass tub when I forced it a little too much while installing it. The repair man fixed it quickly, I think he said that a fiberglass patch could blend in with por. tub also.

do you have a photo of this? Maybe you could sand and blend the damage, prime and spray to match? what is the part number for the item?
I don't have a photo, but it is Kohler part # K-9025 Shower receptor in white. I've decided to bite the bullet and buy a new one. Having it re-coated will cost 2/3 the value of a new one and on a complete bath remodel, we want it to look good and last a long time. I'll just have to be much more careful!

Jack it is quite likely that your original unit was damaged in shipment. Fork lifts usually cause the type of damage you describe. Open and inspect the new one right away. Before signing for it if at all possible. Good Luck!
Clay,
Of course, good advice which will certainly be heeded. I inspected the unit when it arrived, and it was in perfect condition-so unfortunately, I know the damage was my fault. Live and learn, eh?

Yes indeed Jack, and your honesty will be worth more than it costs you. Hold yourself responsible when appropriate and you will be rewarded with a character that can be relied upon, by yourself as well as others. I am a Mizzou fan and enjoy watching our current football coach (Gary Pinkel) operate. He never lets himself or his players accept excuses or shift blame. After a recent win he commented that his team having suffered a blocked punt was "an indictment of me as a head coach". He has also consistently refused to cut himself or his team any slack for well fought games against quality teams (that were also losses). As a result he is widely regarded as an emerging star in the football coaching world. Though he took over a program that has been a dead end for a long series of coaches before him, he now has erased nearly all doubt that he WILL create one of the MOST successful programs in the country. Integrity is priceless!

Thanks, Clay. For me, honesty just makes life, which is complicated enough, more simple. You and your coach have it right.
All the best,
Jack
