For my first set of chisels I am considering to buy the following 3 chisels, all Hirsch from Lee Valley:
1/4″ Firmer
1/2″ Firmer
3/8″ Mortising
How does this sound to start out? I want to maximize quality and buy the most useful chisels for under $100.
Thanks,
Josh

For 3/4" stock a 3/8" mortise is too large. Go for either a 1/4" or 5/16" mortising chisel
Josh,
Buy 'em, then buy a beater and fettle it to perfection.
Gettin there is half the fun. Gotta have some fun.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy/man.

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Just starting? I recently bought a set of chisels from Sears for $18.00, 1/4 inch through 1-1/2 inch. Bought them for 'beaters' for remodeling. (NOBODY touches my bench chisels with a hammer). Actually, they're not that bad. Not too hard to sharpen, hold an edge fairly well, and are cheap enough to throw away when you're ready for the Lie-Nielsen set.
Thanks for all the comments everyone. I'll sleep on it for another week as to whether to buy the 1/4" mortise & 1/2" firmer, or just get the marples and play around with them. This is a great forum.-Josh
