Mr. White,
Can you tell me the manufacturer of the socket chisels shown on the cover of Fine Woodworking, issue #184. I can find no reference to them in the associated sharpening article. Also, have you had the opportunity to work with these chisels? If so, what was your impression of them? Thanks.

The chisels in the cover photo are Barr brand. They are hand forged by a guy named Barr Quarton in Idaho. They are very expensive and very highly regarded, a set of four costs $335.00.
This is from his web site, barrtools.com, and includes a quote from our review of them:
"These chisels are handcrafted with the professional furniture and cabinetmaker in mind or any woodworker looking for superior performance in their chisels. Hand packed on the anvil, individually hardened and ground flat on the back, they will give you many hours of effortless cutting between sharpening. Available in standard 5" blade length, 10" overall. Delivered with rock maple handles. Six pouch leather tool roll included. Filler sizes are available.
"I own six sets of chisels, both new and old. Since I've purchased the BARR CHISELS, they are the only set I use. I can easily go through the dovetails of five or six large case pieces between sharpening. These chisels are a treat to look at, a pleasure to hold, but using them is the ultimate woodworking experience."
