I received a set of Lee Valley bevel-edge chisels as a gift recently, and as I was preparing to sharpen them I noticed that some of them taper towards the point on the sides. Is this normal, or did I get a bad batch?

Do you meen the bevel tapers or that the sides of the chisels taper. The bevels tapering might be just the way they are designed, but if the sides taper you've got a problem.
It's the sides of the chisels. I haven't checked them all yet, but at least a few of them have this issue. Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again.
If the side edges are not square with the cutting bevel of your chisels send them back to LV. This really surprises me though, their quality control is usually top notch. You have nothing to worry about as their customer service is one of the best in the industry.

You may have what is called a " Skew Chesil."
I think he is saying that the sides taper in and not the tip.
Can you post a picture to show this problem?
Well, two years later and I'm finally getting around to revisiting this.To summarize my original question from March, 2005 I have a set of chisels from Lee Valley that taper from base to tip (they are narrower at the bevel end than at the other end). I'm attaching a picture to illustrate what I see when I hold a square up against the side of the chisel. My question is, is this normal, or do I have a bad set of chisels?"Light the lamp, not the rat!
