I have a general question about period furniture. Was yellow pine used to produce furniture in the 18th century southern colonies? If so, was it just for utility grade or was it used for fine furniture – and how often was yellow pine used and was it used on specific pieces or used in general? I’m interested in producing a corner cupboard and thinking of using yellow pine. Is it a good wood to work with? If not, do you have any suggestions what wood or combination of woods would be best for the corner cupboard? If painted or if not painted. Any and all comments and suggestions would be welcome.

I've heard of a lot of painted pine furniture, but I don't know what kind of pine. I'm sure pine was used when it wasn't painted, but most people who talk about antiques don't refer to rustic stuff.

Richie,
See if you can come up with some old growth salvaged long leaf heart pine. I think you'll be much more pleased with the finish product. Do a search on the web for antique pine or pine flooring or pine beams. You're likely to come up with a dealer in your area. Watch for high moisture. Sometimes these beams spend some time outdoors in the rain for a while.
