Hello,
My Porter Cable 4″ X 24″ belt sander just bit the dust and it is now time to replace it. What is your favorite belt sander and most importantly would you buy it again?
The belt sander I am leaning towards is the Bosch 4-by-24 inch sander for the simple reason that it looks like it is balanced and easy to control. Are there any Bosch fans out there?
Thanks – MSD

MSD, I to own a porter cable 4x24 belt sander its 15 yrs old and when it dies I plan on buying another one this time a wisper series with variable speed. Its been my experience most other belt sanders dont hold up to every day shop use like the porter cables do, good luck .
I have a PC 4 x 24 and a Bosch 4 x 24. Both are excellent. Has a lot to do with how you normally use it. The PC is heavier and harder to use upside down. If it gets away from you and tips you've got a gouge. The Bosch has a lighter, streamlined feel and seems easier to control. Of course it will gouge if tipped also. Depends on how you use it must often. I think of the PC as a battleship and the Bosch as a heavy cruiser.
I build a lot of workbenchs for friends and use the PC with coarser grit in the initial stage of flattening tops. Then comes the Bosch with finer grit and next use a sweet little 3 x 21 B-4 scrapers and finish sanding. Hope I haven't confused you.
GOOD LUCK..
I have the Milwaukee belt sander and it's a tank. I would definitely buy it again if I ever had to replace it . I've heard good things about the Porter Cable and that would've been my second choice.
Good Luck!!!
I'm still using and old Rockwell I got from my dad about 4 years ago. I'm not sure how long he's had it but I know it's been around for some time. It still performs great. Seems like the PC's got the vote here.
good luck in your search,
Bill
My 1st criteria was a 4 x 24 variable speed w/ a sanding frame, which really narrows the field. From there it was easy to pick Bosch. I can't really say how well balanced it is because I hardly ever use it without the frame. I can say it tracks wonderfully and with the vac hooked-up dust collection is great for a belt sander.
