I bought a bunch of tongue and groove paneling which was supposed to be surfaced, and it isn’t. It looks like I am going to need to buy a planer. I don’t want to spend all that much as this is an unexpected purchase, but i want to buy the best I can. I am looking over the reviews, but there are brands not in them, like Steel City and Craftsman. Any advice as to what to buy and where to buy it? I need to have in in the next month.

Dear Justlee,
If you're in CT or Westchester, I'll sell you my Makita, at a reasonable price. I have been looking to replace with another...........Makita. If not, then I would suggest......you guessed it!
Makita
Best,
John
I'll second the vote for Makita. Nice little machine. Quiet. Rarely any snipe to speak of. Dust collection attachment works like a charm.
The Makita performs better than the Steel City or DeWalt?
The Makita performs better than the Steel City or DeWalt?
Yes. In a nationally conducted clinical survey, 99 out of 100 dentists surveyed preferred the deep cleaning action of Makita over all other nationally advertised brands....
Dear Just,
I am a contractor and I use my equipment commercially. Either it works and makes me money, or it doesn't. Period. I used to burn up one Delta 12" planer a year for about four years, until I tried the Ridgid. The first time that I have to swap out the blades, the first bolt that I tried to remove stripped and I returned it to HD, vowing never to buy tools from them again. I ordered the Makita from Coastal Tool in Hartford, CT and that was at least six years ago and the darn thing just keeps going. The rollers don't harden and slip like the Delta's did, blade changes are a snap, as the blades are reversible with no knife setting. The bolts haven't stripped either. You can buy a cheaper unit, Yes, but better? I doubt it. Nothing fancy, it just goes and goes. Like others said, get the dust hood.Best,John
I have seen the results from the DeWalt, and I could not see the knife marks on the wood. It looked like no sanding would be needed. Does the Makita have that kind of smooth result?
Dear Just,
Yes, the Makita leaves a beautiful finish. You won't be disappointed.Best,John
I have the Dewalt 735 and I love it. Two speed choices and carriage lock mechanism. I get no snipe with this machine.

Morning Justlee...
I had a Delta 22-580 for 4 years and it preformed admirably. The dust collection was very good. Sold it recently as it got replaced with a 20" floor model.
But if I did have to purchase a bench-top again.. I will echo what has already been stated and would purchase the Makita as I feel personally that it is the best of the rest. We're not talking "night and day", but with enough significance to make it the front runner as I see it!
Regards...
Sarge.. jt
Which model of the Makita?
Afternnon Justlee...
2012 NB bench-top if indeed BT is what you seek. Get the dust attachment with it as every little bit helps in that department.

Justlee:
Sarge is so correct about the DC attachment. I have a 4" > 3" reducer to the attachment and a short length of 4" flexaust to the 5" DC line. No dust, no mess.
Best!

I have a like new Makita 2040 15" planer you can have for $700. Pick it up in Warren, MI.

Craftsman Club sale happening June 3-9 their planer is $197. Don't know anything about it, but they have reviewers posting raves on the site:
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_SessionID=@@@@1311307216.1180986513@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccaddldijifficefecemldffidflk.0&pid=00921758000&cat=Bench+Power+Tools&subcat=Jointers,+Planers+%26+Shapers&vertical=TOOL&ihtoken=1
9 of 11 reviewers gave it 5 out of 5, the other two gave 4 of of 5.
Wood magazine did a review a couple years ago and the Dewalt 735 came out on top. I have one and love it, but don't try to plane staples. The blade changing is great about 5-10 mins. and your done. The 2 speeds are great.
Dear J,
I just looked on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Makita-2012NB-12-Inch-Benchtop-120-Volt/dp/B000051ZOO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-1198263-2171930?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1181264650&sr=8-1
Makita benchtop 12" $288.00 !!!!
I paid over $400.00 for mine six or seven years ago! I going to order one!
Best,
John

Dear Bill,
Yes, I did. That is a bit outrageous, but it still only comes to just over $350.00 which is still$50-$70.00 then it cost me six years ago. Not a great deal, but a good one.Best,John
I think Amazons prices are hogwash.
They show a List Price of $766 for this planer! Their price is now $268.25 + $70 shipping. That's crap.
They trick people into thinking they're getting a GREAT DEAL. Just my 2¢.
Regards,Bob @ Kidderville Acres
A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Tyler Tool is asking $410 for the same planer. They show the same bogus list price as well.
I don't know what shipping would be from Tyler.
But even with $70 shipping, the Amazon deal is pretty good. Have you seen a better price lately?
Not really, I have the DW-735 which I like a lot so am not in the market for a planer. It was just my Amazon rant coming through.
They always artificially inflate their List prices all the time, presumably making them look like they're giving you a HUGE price break. The reality of it is that you can get just as good pricing on most things elsewhere.
I'm a fan of supporting my local retailers whenever I can and that's where I shop first. I use Amazon, et al to get a framework price that is really close to the MSR price, then use that for shopping locally. Often with the shipping I have been able to do just as well if not better.

Dear Bob,
Amazon has done more to even the playing field than anyone else. "List" price is typically recommended by the manufacturer and pretty much means nothing. I agree that the shipping is bogus, but it is still a deal as I know that I paid over $400.00 for my first one six or so years ago. As with everything, it is "buyer beware" just the way it is supposed to be. I ordered one this morning.Best,John
I bought the Makita DT planer about 5 years ago, thinking it would be temporary until I bought a stationary unit. I haven't been able to justify buying the replacement; the Makita just works, and works well, just as it did the day I bought it.
Dear Barry,
That was my experience, as well. I still haven't bought the stationary unit!Best,John
My Makita is about 5 years old. Same model that you get today. Fantastic machine. I have friends who have others. When their's is down, they come use my Makita.

Whoa ! Lets back up a second, Just how bad is this paneling ? A small 10/20 or 16/32 Jet/Performax drum sander may be the ticket.
Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!
